My boat and trailer are moored in my yard and the biggest bug problem I have is spiders- particularly in August. That is true of my house, too. I have a heavily wooded yard and in August spider webs are everywhere. I can walk through 3 or 4 going to my workshop, turn around, and walk through a couple of rebuilt ones before I can get back to the house. A few dryer sheets placed around keeps the spiders out of the boat. I just have to wash them off the exterior before I go sailing. -Paul

Moth balls reek!

I keep a bottle filled with moth balls in my boat. I take the cap off when leaving the boat and put the cap back on when I'm onboard. Bugs don't come into the cabin.

Yeah, but no one else is gonna want to come onto your boat either when it reeks of moth balls! Yuk. Plus the huge a mount of formaldehyde that's in moth balls that gives em their odor is not good for you. Can give some sensitive folks ashma attacks.

Yeah, that is true if you have a moored boat but for a trailer sailboat, you just open the hatches while trailering and the volatile NAPTHELENE will be gone by the time you launch. See photo

Napthelene has the added benefit of being an anti mildew/mold agent. The active ingredient in that old school wood preservative is dichloronapthelene. The chlorides make it less volatile so it won't evaporate.

Oddly enough, one of the first sailing lessons I learned, and I can still hear the old boy say it... "Spiders love Sailin"
