Anyone been to or know about the Marshall Islands (Majuro Atoll)

There is a college there that wants someone to instruct the exact courses I now instuct stateside. For various reasons, one applicable for this site is the desire for adventure and, though pretty limited in experience, a love of sailing I find the prospect very alluring.

There are pragmatic reasons not to go. I have a secure fiscal situation here I am relatively content with. The college there is like a 4 room hospital and a couple of other buildings or something and was a few years ago placed on a warning status by it's accreditor. But there is a tug of the unknown/exploratory spirit (not to mention possible bikini's year round :dance:). I am going to research the weather (rainy season/too hot, it is about 7 degrees N of the equator) and culture, etc. But thought I would throw it out here and see if there is anyone who has been/sailed/heard about it for their opinions?

Ahoy Biorapper,

I have been to Johnson Island and Quajaline (spelling?) There isn't a whole lot of stuff in the Islands. Girls in bikinis are seldom seen. The people of the Marshall Islands are friendly, but don't piss them off. They can throw rocks with great accuracy. They have a penchant for modifying bicycles, if you go there you will see.
The weather I really nice year around. One last thing, they are supported by the U.S. most of there supplies come by ship. The housing is not the greatest for the natives.

You MUST read 2 books by J. Maarten Troost

The first "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" details his life in Kiribati. The second chronicles his time in Fiji and Vanuatu and is titled "Getting Stoned with Savages". Both works are much more serious than the titles suggest.

I know a couple of guys that were there in '44 but they say the sailing was terrible.

Those are some interesting sounding books...

Wasn't captain cook (or one of his crew) knocked to his knees in the surf by rocks thrown, then killed. I seem to remember rock throwing skill being mentioned even from a few centuries ago.

I don't know about going there...perhaps if they were hungry (err, maybe wrong word there)...wanting of forein seed.
