I was in sarasota ,fl this past feb and saw a lot of sail boats on moorings ???? I asked the real estate agent what the deal was with the moorings in sarasota and she said they don't charge anything right now but are going to be changing how things are being done. Anyone know the real deal. nick

5d= 260

I had to leave my hun31 in sarrasota at marina jacks (downtown) for 5 days while I was moving the boat from Stuart FL, to Tampa FL. I saw the moorings out there but prefered the boat in the slip. 5 days later and $260 lighter I may know why mooring is popular in Sarrasota. siggi

that city owned moorings are going in. there may, however, be litigation that is holding up the process.

the real deal

Sarasota has two unofficial mooring fields, one at Marina Jacks and the other just north of the Ringling bridge at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. The Marina Jacks mooring field is a public field but very poorly run, for now. The SSS field requires you be a member of the SSS and there is a wait to get a mooring there. Technically, neither of these fields are a designated anchorage however the SSS has been working on getting a bay bottom lease agreement from the state for several years. The city of Sarasota has been trying to regulate the Marina Jack mooring field for 15 years, no success yet. You have the right to anchor anyplace you choose in Sarasota however they might have a time limit, I'm not sure. Marina Jacks field has long been a haven for homeless people living on whatever raft can be tied to a brick in the bay. In other words, be careful about locking up your stuff over there, things tend to grow legs and walk away. The Sarasota down town area has grown wildly but once you scratch the beautiful surface you are still in the down town of a medium sized city, use caution....
