Have purchased a JRC1800 radar system. Does anyone have any advice on the installation? Should a professional install it?

Radar

Larry, You asked about a 320. There are not a lot of 320's with radar I'll bet. We have radar installed on our 290 and our 356. We did it ourselves on the 290 except for the installation on the mast. If you are handy, no problem. Otherwise, use a professional. I don't imagine it is much different installing on a 320 or 290 or 356 for that matter. Basically, you have to decide where the radome is going and get it installed. The wires need to go where they need to go. Provide protected power, plug in and adjust. Should work. Got one on my 310

My 310, which is very much the same as a 320, had a radar installed. It's on the mast at spreader height. Main problem was finding a location for the display, which was created by moving the tachometer to the tabernacle side and using the large area facing the wheel. Raytheon Radar works very well.

Dan and Bill...

The next question is, once you get the cable down the mast (and our marina will be doing that), how did you get the rest of the cable to the pedestal?---thru the headliner? My friend, who is very handy and put one on his S2, will be helping me do it, so that's why I'm asking. When I didn't get any response initially on this post, I got hold of Hunter, and emailed him pictures of our headliner and hull number, but have yet to hear back from them. Any and all information is certainly appreciated. Thanks.

Routing

Depends. On the 290 we went in the headliner. On our 356 we sent it down through the mast post and then below decks to the nav station. You may want to see what routing will work best for your boat. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)

Chase tube in headliner

Hunter puts chase tubes all over the boat. look in your owners manual you will see chase tube in headliner from compression post access panel go to port and starboard access panel. From starboard side panel to nav station. From just above the nav station is my am fm radio,I removed radio and sent electrician snake thru a 1 1/2 pvc tube into stern of boat next to my holding tank, must remove rear berth bulkhead, than snake up above rear berth in a flex hose up in the cockpit console which has other wires. This is how I ran my radar cable.

Nick,

Maybe, maybe not. We found little in the way of chase tubes in our 290. The primary one in the 356 ran from the panel area back into the port locker. Unfortunately, it was almost full of wires and some of the things we added had to run outside the tube. Larry can take a few access panels off and see what is there, but he may have to figure out a path if his experience is like my own. Dan Jonas (S/V Feije II)
