I have just purchased a hunter 27 (1977). Thinking of adding a CDI roller furler. Anyone done this? Which model should I select for this boat? Is this something that I can do on my own (the mast is already down).

CDI FF6 works well

John, I installed a CDI furler on my 76 H27 about two years ago. The instructons were easy to follow and with a little help from a friend we were able to get it installed. This was with the mast up so I think it would be easier with it down. I did get the ball bearing upgrade which I think is well worth the extra money. I haven't had a bit of trouble with it and wish I had gotten years ago.

Do it!

I just put on a FF6 with the ball bearing upgrade. It came highly recommended and seemed the best value for the boat. I did have it installed, but the instructions that came with it seemed pretty straight forward. If you go to Crusing Designs website, you can download the owners manual/installation instructions

CDI is well recommended

The do well in discussions on this site. Check the archives if you want to see more. Chuck seems to have provided the size, but I'm sure CDI could give you a recommendation from the specifications of the h27. David Lady Lillie

As a matter of fact

I just installed one last week on my 1980 h27. You will need three people to bend the foil in the opposite direction once you unpack it. I did it with two people and caught it in the shin once or twice. Ouch!! I also had to remove the cross section that held my running lights on the bow. Mine were not mounted in the hull. I also got the upgraded ball bearing system. You will need a nicopress tool to install one of the fittings on the cable halyard. I used some vice grips, a hammer,a flathead screwdriver and some tough love. Also had to have a luff conversion done on my headsail. I gave the measurements to my sail guy after I installed it. 37 feet full hoist. For what ever reason THE SAIL WAREHOUSE in CA will sell you the ff6 cheaper than CDI although it is shipped directly from CDI. I studied the directions before the install and it took two of us about two hours with the mast up at the dock. The sail warehouse is on the web. On to the next projects of the dorm fridge guts to ice box conversion.

CDI, Works great.

I own a 1976 Hunter 27 for the past 3 years and it has the cdi roller furl, it has worked without any problems and a very good addition to your boat. Good luck - Good sailing!!

CDI

I just purchased a 1984 H-27, but I had just installed a CDI (FF2 I believe) on my last boat, a Tanzer 7.5 (24.5 ft), and it worked very well. My only gripe with that particular unit was the diameter of the furling line I had to use. It wasn't much more than what would qualify as thick string ( I can;t remember exactly, but I'm fairly sure it was 3/16), and I am wondering at what point they recommend a more robust line. The drawback to the thin line of course is how it would cut into your hands if you needed to pull hard on it. Check first into what size line the recommended unit calls for. I would want something that you can get your hands on a bit better. I gave the headstay to the sail loft guy and I had them install it, for another $100, as I didn't want to chance messing it up, but I do hear it's a real easy job. Sailing wise, it's not a unit with which you would frequently want to change sails, in my opinion.

CDI replaces my rusted Facnor Roller

Happy New Year to all my fellow 27' sailors! Snapped my forestay at the dock in late Dec 2002. Replaced it and got my 2 hank-on sails out on the deck. I was going to go with Harken Mk III... but my begging skills would have never worked on my wife-1st mate. CDI-FF6 looks like the best bang for the buck. Thanx for the CDI name and here's to warmer sailing! Beer tastes better when its warm on the water. Cheers, John s/v LOTUS
