they are very popular on european sailboats that moor stern in to the quay.

I have seen reels being sold at the Seattle Boat Show. They use webbing as the line. 500 feet lengths and longer. I can see there usefulness up in the bays and anchorages of the Inside passage where space is tight and stern anchorage is preferred to a rock outcropping.

We used one in Greece to hold the stern to shore. The reel holds a ridiculous lenght of webbing.

If you are Med Mooring on a nearly daily basis, perhaps it would be ueful, but for a few times a year it seems like overkill.

i'm thinking one of these is useful for reeling the dinghy in and out to shore so the dog can do her dog like business, and for altering the length of line as a painter between the dingny and the mother ship. tying and untying lines gets pretty tedious... plus it's a lovely bright yellow color with floating webbing.

Stern tie, tow line forward or aft, stern anchor, jack lines, kedge anchor. At the ready and takes very little room. Easy out, easy in. Ultra Quickline is what we have but very similar to this reel.
