I recently bought a 1979 Oday 28 and am trying to fine out about the engine. All I really know is it is a diesel and has stern drive. I'll try and include a picture if I can get it to work. Thanks.

Engine ID

It's a Yanmar , YS series. They were made in 8 & 12 HP versions, in 3 series, the YSE, YSB and YSM. Single horizontal cylinder, and I think all were raw water cooled originally. They're all pretty much the same and a factory service manual is available for the last of the series, the YSM's. Try Torresen's in upper Michigan (Marine Diesel Direct) for parts or info if needed.

Need documentation.

I have no documentation on any of the boats systems and am trying to gather information before I need it. I've ordered the Iheart documentation mentioned in another post but haven't received it yet. Regarding the engine, I specifically need to know what model it is. I also am looking for an owners manual and maintenace schedule. There are no services at my Lakeand I will be doing this myself. I looked at the Yanmar website but none of the engines pictured looks like mine. Mine looks like it is laying on its side but I can't tell for sure(see pic). I plan to remove some access panels next visit and maybe it will have an identifying label somewhere. Does the picture above look like any of your engines? I think the motor mount bushings are shot based on the noise and vibration, are these hard to replace? Do you have to raise the engine or can it stay in place? Where can one get the bushings? I'm really pleased by the response so far. Thank you.

YSM8

Mine's a YSM8. It looks just like your picture. I went to the boat today and picked up the manual. Here's a link: http://www.capedory.org/manuals/Yanmar_1980_YSM8OperationManual.pdf If that's not clear enough to read, I can scan mine for you. In my manual, the previous owner wrote on page 26: " Yanmar now recommends class "CC" for this engine." (regarding oil) The maintenance chart starts on page 53. Kevin

Thank You!

I've spent twenty plus hours trying to identify this engine and you have done it. Thank you very much. This board is a great resource. I now come to it first every day. Thanks again to you Kevin, and to James for the owners manual for the O'day 28.
