Anybody recognise this Yanmar?

I'm about to buy an 1976 Ontario 32, but I can't identify the engine. It's an OLD Yanmar (probably the original), 2cyl, RWC. Looks like it pre-dates the 2GM series. Anybody know the model?

She runs really well - starts right up, good compression, runs smoothly, no smoke. So I'll probably not replace it, at least not for a few years. But I need to know the model...

It looks similar to my 2QM15 (which is absolutely from 1978) particularly the fuel filter, the routing of the cooling hose on the top and the location of the zinc. However, the belt configuration is completely different and I don't have a cover over the alternator belt nor any provisions for one. Also different is the the location of the water pump. My pump is on the left, at the bottom in the most inconvenient spot possible. I actually have to remove the pump to change the impeller. Not a quick task.

I suggest it's not the original engine form 1976 as it has design improvements for safety (belt guard) and for convenience (water pump location for changing impellers)

My two cents worth.

The cover appears to be for an external timing chain, not the alternator belt.

There should be a metal plate somewhere on the engine with name and specs. It could be behind the chain cover.

Have to agree with David

The 2QM15 was manufactured from 1975-1980
The 2QM20 was manuafactured from 1975 -1980. This one had many versions.

Good luck

On my engine, the plate is on the lower left side of the block (when facing the engine). Mine is near impossible to read so I gave it a cleaning once when I managed to get reasonable access and it confirmed the specs. Sadly, I wish it said 3YM20 instead...

Just ran across a picture of a 2QM20 taken from the top and it had the same belt cover as yours. Interestingly it had two yellow oil fill locations on the top of the valve cover whereas my 2QM15 has only one.

I'm very confident you have a 2QM20: have a look at the attached photo.

The cover is over a crank starter chain. My 1977 model YSB8 has a similar crank start shaft on a chain drive that lets me crank start the engine if I have to.

Yes, David, that sure looks like it! The cover is over a chain, not a belt, and it'd for the hand crank. The cover looks like it's been sawed off half-way - almost looks like the water pump was moved and the cover had to be cut away to accommodate.

I'll look for the label next time I'm at the boat. Thanks folks!

From your original picture, I think it was sawed off to accommodate the aftermarket water pump.

Anybody have the specs for this engine? The Yanmar site has the owners manual, but it doesn't have hp, max rpm, idle rpm, weight, etc.
