Anybody Make It Out This Weekend

Wow, it was beautiful this weekend, we had some mild temps in the 60s and enough wind to actually play around with and have some fun today. It would be so nice for winter to be done nowso we can get back to the more important things about life, like sailing

Sure did!

Sailed Saturday out to Sand Island, located between Horn and Petit Bois Islands in the MS. Sound. Sailed today in the Pascagoula River for a few hours.............

My girlfriend and I went out Saturday for a nice but short sail. The winds were perfect, 5-10 knots and the bay was calm. The water was gorgeous and the warm weather is here to stay for a while!!!!!!!!!!!!


Hooray and everyone pray that summer will hurry up and get here!!!!!!!!!!

Got out at MDR today. Calm wind with a slow 4' swell in the morning so I fished. Not many people out. Wind picked up after noon. There was a large Russian sailboat in the guest slips today. Boat wasn't in great shape but impressive still. There was a lot of crap in the water. Prop grabbed hold of someones crab hoop. There was no float and judging from the algae on the rope and the smell of the dead crabs in the net it had been down there for several days. Ran over a big plastic bag that stopped the motor dead. I got the rope out without too much hassle but the plastic got sucked in behind the prop and around the spindle. Couldn't get it off in the harbor. Thank goodness that the wind slowed to about 6 mph and landing was down wind. It took about a 1/2 hour to get all of the plastic out.
I had to park my boat in the temporary MDR/mastup compound today. They are resurfacing the Mastup storage yard. We can't get our boats out until March 8. To add insult to injury they are still charging us rent for the month.

Down here in Oceanside the wind wasn't too strong, but swells over six feet, plus rain, plus gusts and too much canvas forced me to run back to the harbor. Down wind leg I was moving at 4.5kts. Tide was ebbing and I was running against the tide. WOW!

Sailed out of St. Mary's Inlet which separates Georgia (Cumberland Island) from Florida (Amelia Island) winds were light (10 kts) seas flat. Flew my drifter

As we were returning from offshore, about a mile out of the inlet we ran across two Right Whales, a mother and calf

If you believe the statistics, they are the most endangered whales with only about 300 on the east coast of the US

Did your camera get wet on the last one?
I got out today for a little while after finishing up a few projects on the boat. It was kind of gusty so I sailed on genny alone. Boat handled beautifully and I hit 5 knots tacking back and forth between Havre De Grace and Perryville. Fishfinder reported the water temp at a balmy 33.
At least I didn't pretend to be an icebreaker going out of the marina today :dance:

Yup.

Coupla friends and I went out for a bit Sunday afternoon. Just north of ChesBay bridge (nr Annap.) Winds were great, borderline smallcraft in Magothy. Beat back home in Deep Creek.

Could not stand working all weekend so we slipped out for Sunday afternoon. Dozens of boats out on Charlotte Harbor. The weather was perfect with sunny skies and 10kts of wind. Best sail of the year so far. 112 day until retirement (again)

Show off! There was water running off BOTH the rails on my boat this weekend (no doubt). It hit 40F for two days in a row so the ice probably melted off ;-)

I made it out

To my boat in my driveway since it finally warmed up enough to melt the ice on the ladder The snow in the cockpit was up to my knees but it was no longer frozen solid. I did manage
to get the companion way doors off, get inside and pump the bilge which was no longer frozen. Great day I cant complain

Watched a few boats head out the Poquoson River yesterday, there were 3 windsurfers tearing it up out there as well. We had some really low tides this weekend and the timing just was't right to make it out. What a great weekend here in SE Virginia... Great pictures by the way!

Sailing in February

Yes indeed. Put on my new 110 jib and got the wrinkles out in West Point, GA. Weather was perfect but the wind got really a bit too strong in mid afternoon. Had a great day!

Frank, what a bummer about the day you had. As far as MDR goes, for an upscale facility, you would think that someone would keep the inside cleaned up ( I figure you got tangled up in all the crap inside the breakwater ) and then to add salt in the wound, charge for rental also. We went through that a while back with a dregging project that fortunate for me, didn't cause me any disruptions.

I had the flag flying this weekend Frank, it looks great, forgot pics of it though. Thanks again, I've got folks asking me how I came by it already.

Yep Manny, I did get a little damp, I have a little trick with a zip lock to minimize exposure to excess water.

bffatcat, guess your day was like a bad day fishin, beats the heck outta work. For me, any day I get on the boat is a great day, no matter what I'm dealing with.

Glad everyone else that got out had a good time, for us, alas, I think it was just a tease and that we still have lots more wintery days left this year.:cry:

I saw that boat at a guest mooring in Newport Beach a couple months ago. It was gone next time I was out sailing, and I never heard anything about it. I've seen some interesting stuff at this one group of moorings near the harbor entrance: Visiting big racing sailboats, a seaplane, a turtled boat hull covered in a foot of barnacles, a derelict intentionally set on fire as practice for the fire department, etc.

I went out yesterday with the sailing club in a local yacht club's fall-winter monthly race series. There was no rain and good 10-15 knot westerly wind (most of the time), a 4 for 4 this year, shocking since it's usual in these races for there either being a storm, strange shifty faint wind, or no wind at all.

Tennessee River

Sailed for 5 hours Sunday on Lake Chickamauga at Chattanooga. 68 degrees, sunny and winds 10 to 15 out of the West. People always seem so surprised that we can sail here. We hit 6 knots boat speed with a dirty bottom. Flew the asymmetrical and sailed upwind under main and 140 genoa. Not bad for early February!

I did some Googling of the boat and it is a 73' America's Cup class racer that was built in Russia and flown to San Diego in the early 90's for the AC race. San Diego would not allow it to be launched so it sat in a warehouse until the Russian team ran out of money. It was then purchased by a Canadian couple who completed the construction and use it as a training boat.
