I have a 1988 Hunter 23, and have purchased stopper, blocks, etc. to move halyards aft. My question in, how thick is the cabin roof? I would like to know so I can purchase fasteners in town, and hopefully make 1 trip to boat for install.

I knew this once...

I did the same thing last year, but my memory ain't what it used to be, so I'm going to guess a quarter of an inch. Even if it's three-eights that shouldn't affect your hardware choice. make sure the bolts are long enough to go all the way through your organizer and roof, and still leave enough extra length for the nuts. If in doubt, buy bolts that are a little longer. You can always cut the excess off, or use them to mount stuff to the underside of the cabin roof (this is a good way to mount a VHF). Don't forget the carpet. I usually get a couple sizes on the bolts. I've got my Marine radio stuck on the carpet with velcro!

I'm basing this on where my organizer was mounted..on the front corner of the cabin right where it starts to curve downwards. This location gives the lines a clear run from the mast base to the organizer and then on to the rear end of the cabin top, without getting fouled on the handholds on the roof. I don't think the cabin top is cored in this area because the shape gives it plenty of stiffness and I doubt they could get balsa core to fit such a tight curve, There's one other way...drill a hole through the cabin top and measure the thickness. If you already have the organizer, drill to match one of the mounting holes for the organizer. If not, you can always plug the bottom of the hole from inside the cabin (a very short wood plug will do it) and fill from the top with epoxy. Peter H23 "Raven"

Cabin Top

I did mine last year as well, and my deck organizer ended up on the curve as did Peter's to allow for a straight shot to the cabintop winch. I don't remember the thickness of the cabintop, and as Peter said that curved area is not cored, however the inboard edge of the deck organizer was in the balsa coring. I made a leveling block to level the organizer and I know I used both 3" and 4" X 1/4" Bolts. Hope that helps. Dave "Wind Dreamer"
