I know this is gonna sound weird but...................I need a little help. Got a dude (Craigslist No Less) in Jensen Beach who has a furler (actually the lower drum and top swivel, no foils)I would like to buy. Price is really good. But this is where it gets weird..........................Offered to ship for free. Doesn't have PayPal or a Bank Acct.. Says I'd have to send him money via Western Union and then he would ship it that day.

Wondering if anyone would be willing to help out (more than willing to PREPAY for the help and your time. Only thing I ask is that you have PayPal and be willing to verify the existence of this uber cheap furler. If you can hel,p just respond here (looks better if everything is out in the open). This sounds _extremely_ suspicious. Have you talked to the seller by phone? If so, does the phone number map to his location?

Im with ya there Phil. Ive talked to him and mapped the number and it shows that general area. Was gonna try to enlist some help. With a VERY public meet of course to verify its not a scam

I ran into a similar issue a couple of years ago. I'm in north FL, found a guy in CA on Craig's List with a piece of boat gear I wanted. I spoke with him, he seemed ligit but he didn't want to send gear without payment and I didn't want to send money to a stranger. Finally came up with this plan. He listed it on eBay with a buy it now price that we agreed to. I was waiting as soon as the listing appeared and bought it and paid with Paypal. Thay way I had eBay buyer protection.

Showed up, good deal, everybody was happy.

He's got an older profurl (top and bottom only, no foils) and he's asking $125. The price was the first red flag......way cheap. The second was that he "can't" do paypal and he doesn't have a bank account. Then he offered to ship for free.............way cool, but with the other info it seemed kinda off. Then he sent me pics of the unit from a "mailbox plus" web address. Taken all together I'm leary.

Not sure this makes any sense. If you send him 1/2 the bill, aren't you still out the full amount? What are you going to do with a cut up $100 bill (for example) without both halves if the seller doesn't respond? How does this ensure anything?

I have a certified check that I keep forgetting to frame. Its for $3600 Canadian. I had a room for rent and some nice guy from jolly old England wanted to live in my basement so bad.... So the check came in the mail from British Columbia...? When I took it to the bank the manager wouldn't even touch it physically. Slipped a piece of paper under it to pick it up...
She told me it was a very good forgery and to take it to the police station. So I did. Cop said they get hundreds of them a week! He told me to frame it. Its on a shelf in the shop. I think...
The guy never showed up... But he called 3 times to see if I had wired the extra $ to his shipper...
Got to love Craigslist! Ya meet all kinds of interesting people.

If the seller agrees to this scenario he likely seems legit, as far as this deal goes anyway. How is he to gain from a half a bill? Gotta wonder about the rest of the story though. Is he hiding from someone or something and trying to stay off the grid? On the other hand just because a guy is a crook does not mean he is not honest.

The seller doesn't gain and the buyer loses all of it. Just because the seller agrees to ship doesn't mean he ships anything, the buyer still loses.

I must be missing something because I see no upside to your logic.

there was an add on here back in February selling garmen 740 S chart plotters for $750.00 complete i responded to the add and found they were here in atlanta....contacted the person and said i would pay cash via me coming to them and pick the unite up personally ......he responded back only agreeing to shipping it to me for$15.00 and that it would be cheaper to do that than me coming to him 25 miles away.....i then posted a warning on this site about people and there scams ...i felt that if i wanted to spend my gas money to make a purchase that was my problem not the sellers (while thinking that the deal was to good to be true)...gut instinct is always better than any thing else i have found over the years.....

as far as as the deal you have just walk away ...if some one is willing to help you ...the draw backs can be very serious ones ...if the one who helps you were to meet this person with cash in hand he or she may get fiscally robbed at the meeting or even worse hurt or shot for the $125.00 in question here....it is just not worth it .....check with sailors exchange in st Augustine Fla and see if for a fee they will take it in and sell it to you ...that would be much safer than anything i can think of at this time.....

personally if i were close by the seller i would help you (yes i know that is against my advice lol) .....just my 2 cents ...good luck on your choice....if you do complete the transaction with or with out success let us know either way

I guess I was operating on the basis that this guy is legit and a way to verify that he is. If you suspect it is a scam then you have already put more effort into this endeavor than it is worth.

Thanks to all for the interesting suggestions. But it has become a moot point. Contacted the guy last night and told him I had a "friend" local to his area and would just go ahead and have him pick it up. Was to call this am to arrange meet and pick up and when I called 3 times I couldn't get the guy to answer his phone. Called back a few minutes ago (right before this post) and I was told "a guy here locally offered me twice what I was asking so I sold it to him". Gonna post up a want-ad and deal with people I know.

run! we have some flea markets this time of year. and there's a place in ft pierce that sells used marine gear.

it would be easy for him to sell it locally if he wanted.

ebay sounds as good as it gets.
