Well the S2 that had the fan fire is finally on it's way to a new home. Sold off the sailboat owners classifieds. MANY THANKS The buyer builds custom guitars, and he gave me some advice about varnishing any wood that has some oil in it, such as teak. His method is to rub it down good with naptha, then a good rub down with acetone, and finally a final rub down with mineral spirits. Anyone ever heard of this. He says it will give you a finish much better than just an acetone rub. Going to give it a try on the next stuff I do, but that may be a while.

How long to allow it to dry before the first

varnish coat? Acetone is not all that great for degreasing but naphtha and mineral spirits, lacquer thinner and xylene are all very good.

Didn't say

Ross, he did say to allow it to dry completely, said it was pretty fast, but didn't give a time frame. I have been doing an acetone wipe before the first coat, and it only takes a few minutes for the acetone to flash off. The varnish work I have seen on custom guitars is so outstanding, I am going to have to give it a try. After reading some of Main Sail and Tony B posts about the varnish stuff, my work is now 100% better than it was. If I can improve more, I will be a proud and happy camper.
