Any Tips on Installing the Headliner?

I have the interior of my V25 pretty well gutted. Power washed the years of neglect off and plan to paint the inside ceiling in the V birth. Then cut new headliner panels using the old ones as pattern. Originally the headliner was held up with screws popped through the upper deck and sticking through. I'd like to fill the holes and come up with a "cleaner" way to fasten the headliner. Also do away with some head damaging poke throughs.

Any good suggestions how to do this? I'm thinking I could glass in some plywood blocks to screw into. Not the nicest look, but OK. I also thought of velcro as a fastener. But don't know how to attach it to the fiberglass ceiling.

Looking for ideas.

I once restored an Austin Healey, and when it came to the interior carpet, it was glued down with a spray contact cement. You coated both contacting surfaces with adhesive; let it almost completely dry the put the two adhesive surfaces together TIGHTLY. We had to actually use a rubber mallet in many places.

So the point is, in my boat, the PO did the same thing on the ceiling areas. Pretty good job too. But if I lived in a high humidity area, I would just paint and go with the shiny surface. Easy to clean. I will say the boat with the carpet on the ceiling is more quite. By the way, the carpet is especially made for this type of application and not a house floor carpet. I think it allows a little more stretch for molding around shaped surfaces.

I was considering something like that in the V birth. I was not sure if it was a good idea to glue to the ceiling.

Mine had the carpet, after installing tjib tracks, toe rails, cleats etc, there were a lot of pointy bits, I glued some pine blocks to the overhead with 5200, then screwed some thin beadboard varnished on both sides. Not finished with it yet, but you get the idea.

The big moldy carpet on the ceiling turned me away from a cheap Mac 25. I'm glad my interior on the 26D is just fiberglass. When it gets moldy, and it was when I got it, I just power wash. Then wipe dry. The mold will come back in about 1 mo. around here so theres no way carpet is going in. I'm even thinking about removing the carpet on the center board trunk. Yuck.

That looks very sharp, We have carpet in ours when we bought it and it needs to be ripped out! I never thought of wood though.

It looks so ruff without anything. And I hate overhead sanding, especially fiberglass.

What kind of paint did you use. We have the old carpet on the overhead and would like to remove it and paint the whole top and side where you can see the old fiberglass? Do we use regular latex paint?

Sail rite has some videos on their website . Go to the headliners and you should see them.

They put up wood strips and velcro liner glued to what I think was formica.

The headliner like this lets you hide your bolts but still get at them when you need to.

I would not use latex. I am in the process of cleaning up the mess from what the PO did to the inside of my V25. It was peeling and flaking and looked like he... But a little work with a power washer and it already looks better. From what I have read here in the forum this is a good paint to use on the inside,

It is Glidden Trim & Door paint. I found it at the local Home Depot @ 20.00 a quart.

Soap and water wash then a wipe down and then an oil based paint.

Use lots of ventilation.

I put a box fan over the front hatch to blow air in.
