Any thoughts on an in-hull depth transducer?

I've been thinking about adding an in-hull transducer. Specifically a Raymarine P79. The reason I'm considering doing this is because I'm not planning to pull the boat (h34) from the water anytime soon. Has anyone replaced a transducer while in the water? I've read about folks who have done this, but it sounds a bit... dare I say, insane????? or is it a viable option? Thanks!

Added this quick question... Are transducers standard in size? Will the New Raymarine transducer one fit through the original locations?

I have both a shoot through and an in hull transducer. The way my in hull is mounted, I can pull it in the water and quickly put a dummy plug in. As long as I replace it with the same model, or same locking assemblage it is easy. But then again, what it truly easy on a boat? That is why I added the shoot through for the plotter (fish finder?) use. It was easy to add and the two play nice with each other.

I glued an old transom mount transducer that came with my plotter. I made a dam the shape of the pickup, poured it half full of epoxy, then set the device in so it was level. I was skeptical that it would work, but it does flawlessly and is very accurate. I have tested it against my old still working signet pickup. I have a garming sonar attached to a 3006c plotter.

They work perfectly, and both give good returns in 400 feet of water.
