I know there are supposed to be more sheep that people and I heard that almost everyone there has a boat. Is this true? - is there a place that I can look this up or calculate or get a list of marinas? Are they mainly locally made or there lots of Catalinas, Hunters etc from the US? Anybody? Anybody? (apologies to Ferris Beuler). Thanks Jim W

Yes

As an expatriate Kiwi of more than 30 years I cannot give you the latest details, but the short answer is that there are many, many sailboats given the size of the population. My brother sends me the local boating magazines, and it is evident that the local boatbuilding industry is alive and doing well. Most sail boats are definitely locally built. NZer's are very much more "do-it-yourselfers" than we are in the USA, and there is a much larger fleet of home-grown boats. As you probably know - Auckland is known as the "City of Sails". Derek

Why?

Recently the New Zealanders were joking "Why is the rest of the world drinking out of mugs?" Answer "because the Kiwis have won all the cups" - one of them is quite large too! For a numerically very small population they appear to have a fairly healthy industry over there. Regards,
