When I got my Cal 34 series 1 it had a huge 5' tall ac/dc/propane frig which was old and too big. I removed it and put a small non marine frig with microwave on top in the huge space. I want to build in good marine frig and icebox for week long trips to Catalina. I hear lots of complaints about Norcold. Any suggestions on dependable brands?

Norcold

After 10 years solid use my Norcold compressor suddenly stopped working. Had it serviced and the guy replaced the drier whatever that is, refilled it with green gas, shortened the lines a bit etc. and it still runs like a dream. Only problem is I keep the setting at #2 of 10. Any more than #2 and things start to freeze up. The key seems to be a well-insulated cavity around the unit. The PO did a good job on that. Draws 4.6 amps when cycled on but does not run long in normal use. FWIW I have had great service from that little unit and it is very quiet. Who said it was doubtful? Not my experience.

Isotherm SP

JB: In my opinion there is no reason that I can see to have a refrigeration unit that runs on AC & DC. If you are not a "cruiser" and you are hooked to a dock with AC power, a DC unit and a quality inverter is the best way to go. We purchased an Isotherm SP unit for our Hunter Vision 36 and could not have asked for a better unit. It is nearly silent and uses very little power. The cooling is done by circulatin the "freon" through the thru hull fitting on the sink drain. They are not the cheapest and far from the most expensive.

Waeco/Adler Barbour

Bought a Waeco/Adler Barbour CU-100 Cold Machine with VD-150 Small Vertical Evaporator for my 5ft3 cold box. Runs on battery. Works beautifully.
