looking for an inverter to run my dvd while on the hook, I was able to find a 15" LCd TV that will run off 12vdc or 120 ac, but have had no luck in finding a 12vdc dvd. I have a Vector inverter and it's cooling fan is too loud. In hind sight probably should have gone the inverter route to allow me a wider choice on the TV as well, live and learn... Hoping to find a good quiet inverter on someones real life recommendation. There are plenty of choices out there. Thanks, Mike

DVD on 12VDC

Mike I know these animals (12VDC DVD player)exist since I bought one a couple of years ago at the local music store. Regardless, any decent sized inverter will have a fan which, although relative, will make noise. I think your only other choice is one of the small "brick" type inverters which do not have any fan. They are quiet but don't produce a sine wave type filtered DC which, depending on what DVD player you have or buy, might go up in smoke because of the bad power wave generated.

Audiovox makes

Some nice 12volt tv dvd mp3 players I have a 12" in the boat a 15" in the camper and asmall 10" in my kitchen. I used a small cabelas 12 volt lighter plug inverter for the TV for a year before i fixed the 12 volt power cord to work in the plug .I have a hart inverter/ charger but dont want to run it all the time.Im on a mooring and use solar chargeing to top off the batterys. The TV dosent seem to burn much battery power I can watch tv for days without droping my batterys down below full charge. The refrig is another story. John

West Marine

There are cheaper places to buy one but I purchased a 300 watt model from West Marine That either hard wires to the battery or plugs into a cigarette lighter. It will work the TV/DVD combo and other things. I think I paid about 50 bucks but have seen them on sale from time to time. I really don't remember any noise associated with the inverter. Jack

Many Car Stereos Play DVD

Google "Car Stereo DVD". Many car stereos will play DVDs and all are 12v. You can probably replace the car stereo you currently have in your boat with one of these units and get the advantage of playing DVDs through your boat's speakers. Anything you buy at West marine will cost at least 2x what it should!

Turn the volume up on the TV to

drown the fan noise or locate it inside a compartment and run an extension cord to the unit. I had the same concern for years and was unable to locate a quality silent inverter in the small sizes. The 12V side needes to be close to the battery but the 120V side can be extended by the use of an extension cord with very little loss of power. I used to plug in the inverter to a 12V receptacle at the navigation station and open the lid of the table and stick it in there and run an extension out to the TV. There was an adequate volume of air for cooling purposes and as the lid did not close all the way because of the extension it had some ventilation but more importatnt it drowned out 3/4 of the fan noise. I now carry a hard wired 2000 W inverter installed under the port setee and hardly hear it running.

sell DC DVD players, pretty cheap too. Of course, you get what you pay for. Check any of the big ones along 40 or 95 in NC. Maybe their websites too, Pilot, Flying J.

The fan in the Vector is a piece of junk.

As are most of the fans in the lower end units. I have a Vector in the van and it is noisy too. I can only recommend getting a higher quality unit that uses a good fan.

15" ac/dc tv Real Digital LCD

There are some 15" ac/dc LCD TV's with DVD players on E-bay right now. They go for about $225 plus $25 shipping. I read a report by one sailor who bought one and felt the picture was great. Go to E-Bay and enter Real Digital LCD and you will get the site. Was thinking of buying one myself. They are not returns, since I asked that question last week.

All of these things run off of DC, at least inside the box. The wall plug is only for home use. Maybe you could try calling around to local repair shops. (There should be one or two still in business) Ask if they can hook up a DC input wire to run your 'home' unit. If not, send it to me and I'll do it. For free. ;)
