I will be looking at a 1982 34' Oday tommorrow, and was wondering if there are any specific problems I may want to look for in this model. We are looking for a larger boat as we have a 27' Catalina right now, so I am not to familiar with Oday's at all. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

As you already have a boat, you know more about them than me. But I'll tell ya about mine. We got our 1982 34' O'day last august. First sailboat. First boat. We paid to have a marine surveyor check it out. The boat was very well kept by the PO. The only big problem was some soft core starboard of the mast. Haven't fixed it yet. Also very small soft spots here and there near the bow, but otherwise very solid for a 27 year old boat. This past winter we did some work. The ball valves were tight so I greased them. My water intake to the engine was a gate valve so I replaced it.

You probally know all about where water can leak in a boat and other normal boat problems, but I would check:

Stantions. Two have small cracks at the base. Surveyor pointed them out.

Look for gate valves. My water intake for the engine had one.

The keel is cast iron. Check for signs of rust. Mine is excellent and even the keel bolts in the bildge were shiny. Mine is shoal draft.

The surveyor did not crawl behind the engine but last winter I did and had to replace the steering cables. Just one meat hook but I replaced it anyways. (I have wheel stering, factory option I'm told) Also greased the rudder shaft as it has a zerk fitting. Was told ther are two grease fittings but I have only one.

Had mast removed last winter for storage cause I wanted to. The coax to the VHF was fairly new but whoever soldered the PL259 connectors did a very bad job so I repaired them. Installed new mast antenna also.

No hour meter for engine. Engine oil was black so I'll be changing it every month this summer but engine runs fine. PO installed electric fuel pump (replaced engine mounted one), and put a new Rancor fuel filter on.

Sails were in excellent shape but being new to sailing I took the main to a loft to be checked out. Just needed a cleaning. Paid extra to have the O34 insignia put on. :)

Jib has roller furling. No problems here.

Surveyor checked 120v electrical for proper ground and it was ok BUT!!!!!
The orange light on the panel to check for polarity from shore power was DISCONNECTED! Don't know why.

Surveyor said there was an emengercy tiller but we never found one.

Hope this helps. Please ask questions if ya have any.

I have an O'day 35 which is a 34 with the addition of a sugar scoop swim platform on the transom. If you have kids or plan to use the dinghy regularly, see if you can find a 35 in you're area for sale. The platform is VERY convienient!

Hello,

There are no endemic problems with the O'day 34/35 models.

As with all older boats, look for signs of water leaks into the decks. Also, the rudders can get water logged. Have the boat surveyed and any decent surveyor will know what to look for.

Some nice things to look for are an updated traveler (the stock traveler uses pin stops and not line controls), additional batteries (stock was 2, mine has 2 for the house and one for the engine), good bottom paint (mine had about 20 years of build up, which was removed by a soda blaster guy), dodger / bimini, autopilot, and other typical things.

I am very happy with my 86 35.

Good luck,
Barry

Danny,
Can you elaborate on the "sugar scoop swim platform". Was this factory or did you add? I have an ODay 28 and my daughter has been bugging me for a swim platform. Any advice or pics would be great. You can email me at skisil@nycap.rr.com

Thanks

RE: problems with an O'Day 34....

The biggest problem I have is getting my wife to let ME take the helm! She has become a much more confident sailor since we bought the 34.

Second problem is that we sail so much that I don't have time to mow the lawn!

Both of those are problems I enjoy having. We enjoy the boat. 1984

I bought a 1985 Oday 35 with a sugur scoop transum last year. I did a bottom job due to blisters and replaced the rudder. The ruddur can happen with any older boat. The blisters happen on some and not on others. Even with the work and money I put into the boat, it is well worth it. Sails great and is very dependable.

Hello,

Some time in 1985 or 1986, O'day changed from 30, 34, 39 to the 31, 35, 40. The only difference was the addition of a swim platform on the stern that added another foot of length.

I attached a view of the stern of my boat (before I bought her) so you can see what I mean. This is not something you can easily add.

I have had my 35 for about 15 years, it's an 86 I bought around 94 or 95.
The swim platform is great and I recommend. I have seen a bolt on swim platform on an older Island Packet. It is a teak platform with support braces so yes this can be done.
Same comment with wet deck around the hatch, solved by removing hatch scraping out the rot then epoxying in strips of wood inserted horizintally between the skins. Worked great and prevented having to cut the deck.
I replaced the rudder after a delamination in winter storage, if the rudder is wet and bakes in the sun it will delam.
Next project will be a motor upgrade, new wires, new panel , new exhaust. And maybe a keel removal and rebedding. After 25 years the original sealant is probably pretty shot and its a good idea to make sure the bolts are not suffering from crevice corrosion.

We have had a 1982 34 for since 1992. The only Thing I notice was a few voids in the deck and cockpit deck. The hull was sound. Preforms well in the ocean when the weather is less than pleasant.
We are thinking of selling to go to a trawler. Getting old and tired of climbing up and down. I added an elect. anchor winlass and replaced Vbirth draws with shelves.
