Hey I'm in the same boat. So to say.
I'm planning to hatch one this winter.
We just had a PDR regatta last weekend at our club. There were 5 boats. We had hoped for 7 but 2 couldn't make it( there about an hour away).
If you are looking for plans there are free ones on line. Its basically the hull shape and the amount of flotation. Anything above a certain height is a free for all.
Here are a couple links.
Building the Puddle Duck Racer
OzRacer - Wooden Boat Plans - super cheap, super simple and super fun. (NOT a PDRacer!)
That "Not a PDRacer" thing...my take is its its own class built on the PDR hull shape.
Ill ask some of the guys that have built them at the club if they have anything on line and let them know about this thread.

LOL-A woman friend of mine has 6 of them. And if you look at pics from 2008 and 2009 Texas 200 you'll see a bunch of pics.

Shorty Penn, who invented the things, is a friend- stands about 6'6" You should see him in one:)

Awesome! I am thinking about building one and running the Everglades Challenge in 2013.

There was an article in Small Craft Advisor by a guy that designed one specifically for and sailed it in the last EC Challenge. Thing it was the July/August issue? He had some good pointers on weight distribution and floatation.
I'll see if I still have that issue but I may have given it to my neighbor.

Thanks but I too am a sca reader and re-reader! Great mag.
I am also a huge fan of Scamp.

The design I like best so far is the ocean explorer from the duckworks plans. I think having a separate dry cabin is a plus for such an uncomfortable race.

Should have figured you are a SCA guy! I wait for that mag with bait like breath and read it cover to cover. Just checked out the Ocean Explorer! What a great boat.
For fun, check out "Travels with Miss Cindy" if you haven't already. http://turtleislands.net/tmc/
Awesome boat and I really like the biplane rig.

Finding: both plaques are cool but the second one is perfect!

I built the ozracer and was inspired to the point where I lead the effort for my son's scout troop to build 5 more a couple years ago (3 are 3-dimensional at this time). Changed the ozracer design to simplify sailing; used a pivioting leeboard and rudder to keep beaching simple and changed the sailplan a bit. Had a great sailing campout a couple weekends ago.

The puddleduck was a big player in the Texas 200 2 and 3 years ago but did not see any original 8 footers this summer.

Its great to see this kind of response! I am excited to build one and try it out. We do a lot of kayak camping and this is a logical next step.
Merlinuxo, that book recommendation is spot on. I read and loved it. I too can't wait for sca to show up. I want to make it to one of the small boat training trips someday. Maybe we should start a new forum, micro cruisers or something?

Ah- but Andy Linn sailed the PDR big sister- a Goose. Carried it down from the NW to Texas in his pickup bed. The Goose is 12 feet long.

This year was my (and Traveler's) third 200.

That was Scot Widmier in his PDR in the EC by the way. Very good saiilor.

I was the person who towed him into Port Mansfield!

I have to admit something.
I'm not building a PDRacer just for sailing!
No. I plan to use it as a tender when we go to the North Channel next year.
I am actually thinking of putting a small outboard on the back too! Maybe some type of a small wood removable keel! Or just use the lee board.
So it will be a kind of dual purpose vehicle.
Hey I could put 2 wheels on and a tong and it would be utility trailer... Maybe even a third wheel off the tong and some steering and its a wind buggy... Then some blades and...
The PDRacer could be a true SUV.

Have you sailed the goose? How does it stack up to the PDR? I am not only looking at the PDR, just an easy build, lightweight boat for the EC.

That is an interesting blog. I am still giving this some thought. That ocean explorer oz duck is still looking good. I may also check out a 12 ft. rowing/sailing boat built locally and for sale on Craigslist.
