Beneteau Oceanis 461 St Augustine, FL
Greetings!

I have enjoyed sailing Layla, my '97 Oceanis 461 since Fall '05. All of the places (Rhode Island down to Amelia Island, FL) that I kept her, she ended up being the only 461, noone to share experiences with. Are there any 461 sailors out there who would be interested in forming a 461 owners forum (or something else that'll serve the same purpose)? Is there already something in place that you know of?

Some info about Layla and me:

I singlehand Layla, and would love to hear any ideas about other short handed 461s. I used to singlehand a '83 First 30E for around twenty years; the 461 has been quite a jump as you can imagine.

Layla is one of the three cabin/two head versions. She has a Perkins MT80 (80 HP turbo) engine option with a 3 bladed fixed prop and in-mast furling. After the purchase, I added air conditioning and a MaxPower (12VDC) retractable bow thruster - The bow thruster was supposed to save my marriage  but it failed to do so (it still works very well but the marriage didn't :)) Also, recently added new N. Pryde sails (a PBF main and 150% genoa) as well.

I am typically a do-it-yourselfer. Except for the A/C and fiberglass installation of the thruster, I was the one to blame for everything...:)

The basic boat appears to be well built and sails well. I have had to repair/redesign numerous non-structural components; a bit of a nuisance - however, now that Layla and I know each other much better, the sails have been progressively more enjoyable.

Next planned trip is to the Abacos this May/June timeframe.

Future improvements wish list includes folding/feathering prop, genset, finally re-installing my HF radio, etc, etc..... (It seems there is always something else)

Anyway, if you are a 461 sailor (or similar type Beneteau) I'd love to hear from you.

Fair winds!

463 owner in St Pete

I bought XTC, my 1998 three cabin, three head version in April 2006 after losing XTC, my Hunter 40, in Katrina. the new XTC is now berthed in the St. Pete Municipal Harbour. It was in charter and a "bare bones" boat at the time I bought it. Since then I have added four new sails, 6KW generator, A/C, all new electronics plus lots more too numerous to mention. It is a great sailing boat and I love taking it offshore in the Gulf. Last year we won the non/spin division of the Isla Mujeres race out of St. Pete. Plus XTC now holds the record for the fastest non/spin time (67+ hours) to Mexico in that race.
I was very fortunate to find this boat and have only good things to say about it. I can think of very few negatives.
Happy sailing, Tom Glew

Tom,

I had - mistakenly - thought that new postings would trigger emails to me :) oh, well.

It seems your experience with XTC is consistent with mine with Layla. I plan to move Layla over to St Augustine this June - let's stay in touch, perhaps we can meet at East or West coast sometime.

I have been looking at generators - which genset did you end up getting and where did you install it?

Does XTC have in-mast furling main? It is great to hear you did so well in a longer distance! It'll be great to enter some of these races like the Gulf Streamer from Daytona to Charleston..

Fair winds and thanks for sharing your info!
