Looking for anybody who has a Nissan or Tohatsu outboards on there 27. Im intrested in the mounting and what problems you might have run in to. I have a 9.8 and it has good power and pushes the boat great. I looking for info on mounting and about tilting it up, and what problems you might have had, dont want to cut the boat up to much.

me too....

I have the same Tohatsu, a terrific motor. I can only tilt it up by removing the cowling. A fitted canvas bonnet combined with the shelter of the lazarette cover offers adequate storage protection (mild San Diego climate) Needless to say, when sailing, I leave the motor down. I eventually plan to modify the mount but, feeling the same way you probably do, want to make the correct alteration. When I contacted David Graas, Catalina customer service, I was concerned that enlarging the opening upwards might weaken the hull and single backstay. Here is his reply: "Joseph, Before doing that, be sure that the motor can't go down any farther by cutting the bottom side. You can also place a 2X8 on the back of the transom to move the motor out and that adds to the clearance. If you still need to cut the upper edge, either go to a split backstay (you can then make it adjustable, an added benefit) or place a backing plate across the inside of the motor well and bolt the existing chainplate through it." Hope this helps, let us know how your alteration came out.

Nissan Outboard

My C27 came from from previous owner with a 1998 9.8 2-stroke attached to the stern since the boat had a dead diesel still inboard. Due to the type of spring mount, I have problems lifting it up from the water, but it tilts out ok with no drag. Jim Stocks #3334
