Any of you doing a Thankgiving sail?

Our group does a thur, fri, sat sunday cruise. Thursday we sail to Don Pedro park and Friday have our big feast. Saturday is leftover day and Sunday return. Been doing this for the past several years.

Not this year, unfortunately..but.. first year I had the boat, 1991, we did Thanksgiving with about 10 other boats, anchored up a bayou where some dredging allowed us to put the nose of the boat on shore and get off that way. We built a big campfire and roasted things and made other side dishes on board.. A FINE time was had by all! Sadly these places are now all full of homes .. no one around does much of that anymore.

Not in the sense you mean, but we would very much like a turkey dinner with all the fixins, American style, so we might have to sail for a few days to find one.

We are currently in Elizabeth City, NC and will be in Oriental Tue or Wed. Further down the ICW for Thanksgiving. Hopefully sailing but more likely motoring.

I've always thought of Thanksgiving as celebrating and sharing, not necessarily with family, but with friends and even strangers who are there. While Christmas is really for family.

Many, many years I spent Thanksgiving at Mammoth Mountain with a couple of ski buddies, and whomever else we could recruit, and had our dinner at the lodge buffet. It was awesom...

Back in the 70's I lived in the SF Bay area and my roommate and I were always invited to thanksgiving dinner... Great, great memories of kind people sharing what they had with the orphans.

So the story about the drunken family members is so typical.. and that's why you should find your thanksgiving wherever you are doing what you love.

My wife and I have been hosting a "Post Thanksgiving Day Weekend" at the Mission Bay Yacht Club in San Diego for 5 or 6 years now. Our trailer sailor friends come from around Southern california and Arizona for a fun weekend on Mission bay.

i won't be on the water this year but i always try to find some people that really need a nice thanksgiving meal and provide them with one in my own humble way ....and except for the thread that i have just disclosed this to i usually don't even tell any one........

Thanksgiving Sail

No nine days off here, but four and a half will do. Last year was our first Thanksgiving on the boat on a mooring ball at Hope Island. Hoping for a repeat this year.

About seven years ago I grew tired of dealing with my sister in law getting hammered every Thanksgiving and making everyone very uncomfortable. Convinced the Admiral we would be better served to take our 9 days off from school and do a cruise. So now every Turkey day we are on the boat. This year we had planned on crossing the Gulf to Tampa. The weather is not cooperating. So now we will do an intercoastal cruise from Panama City to Carrabelle so we can jump in December. Any time on the boat is a good time. Anyone else doing a turkey cruise?

We'll have an informal race Saturday. I'm still working on a ride. Wednesday not looking so good for New England - except for skiers. Usually we can't buy a White Christmas. This year we're trying a avoid a White Thanksgiving.

It's "tradition" with us for many years now. Those few years when we didn't do the Thanksgiving weekend sail, we wished that we had! Living in St. Petersburg, FL in the 1990's we'd always sail to Otter Key; an anchorage just off Big Sarasota Pass, sometimes stopping at Moore's anchorage off the ICW near Longboat Pass the first night. In a two-boat companion trip our friends would host us on their Catalina 320 to a dinner spread from Boston Market; just to make things easy! In CA we've traveled from Long Beach to Newport Harbor, Marina del Rey, Isthmus Cove, Cat Harbor, & Redondo Beach; and from Ventura Harbor to Channel Islands Harbor so far. Later this week we're hoping to snug up at Fry's Harbor or Coches Prietos on Santa Cruz Island with a couple of Cornish game hens and Petite Syrah, Zinfandel, or Chianti--or any other good red wine--for din-din!

Iced in - already?
The scallop fishermen have the same reaction here. BTW, if you have the opportunity or means to sample the bay scallops (In our case the Peconics), but I expect also the waters of RI and MA, they are exceptionally good this year. And less expensive. Yes at $15/lb they look expensive but last year they were at one point $28/lb. They are bucket list good this year. Best $15 you'll spend. If you can get them don't miss out. Please don't broil them, or fry them. Dredge in a little flour, sauté in butter being careful to not over cook, skip the wine, garlic and sauces and enjoy a heaven sent treat.
