Any new MH-40 owners?

I am a new Marlow Hunter 40 owner. The boat has the mariner package and the Marlow package. Nice boat!
She is a 2013 Model that came from dealer inventory as a demo (25 hours). I took delivery in December 2014.
One problem is seen right from the start is the wall paper installed on the interior. It is starting to show discoloration in spots (looks like it has the mumps). My first mate does not like it. Has anyone seen this problem, or am I the only one?
Other than that and a problem with the microwave oven, I have not seen any problems on the boat, but it will not be splashed until late March. Also, what is the recommended antifouling paint for the Yanmar saildrive?

I would suggest that you contact Hunter directly about both problems. The boat is to new for bad wall paper and a failed microwave.

Hunter has a good warranty and they stand behind them. Your dealer should/must be your go to person for all repairs whether it is for the hull (wall paper??) or equipment (microwave).

I would expect that after a year or more of the boat being in service (demo) that there would already be antifouling on the hull and saildrive. So the dealer should be able to help out here also. Regarding the saildrive, I received this from Trilux last year:

"The most commonly used antifouling paints on aluminum sail drives in the US would be Trilux 33 w/ Biolux and/or Pacifica Plus w/ Biolux."

Be mindful of antifouling on the prop depending on what material it is fabricated from and also the saildrive rubber fairing.

Congratulations on your nice boat.

Thanks to all who replied, here is a little more information. Hunter has not stepped up to the plate on the wallpaper issue. The dealer did agree to fix the problem around the forward head when I signed the contract although the boat was delivered without it getting fixed. I have a cabinet maker/carpenter looking working with Hunter through the dealer about the best way to remedy the problem, although we have not gotten any formation back from Hunter yet. Since I have spent several days in the boat, we have noticed that the wallpaper discoloration is on all the doors and seems to be getting worse over time. So yes, I have been in contact with the dealer and I know they have contacted Hunter. Since all the doors can be removed and easily shipped to them, I would have expected that they would want to fix those themselves. Since gluing wall paper directly to a teak bulkhead is nontraditional, there is not much local knowledge on the materials (especially glues), and process to clean and repair the section. The wood under the paper is teak, so I would not be apposed to having Hunter remove the paper and restore the teak. This would ensure the problem does not ever come back.

This begs the question - why would you want wallpaper to cover teak?

If not your choice, why would any boat builder do that?

I too took delivery of one of these beautiful boats in late November. Also a 2013 demo with the Mariner package and 40th anniv. edition. I have not noticed any discoloration yet with the wallpaper. I'll watch for the same problem.

What is your warranty period? One year or two years? If you are splashing in March 2015, then you have lost at least 3 months, possibly 4 months to detect other issues. As a Hunter owner, I can assure you that there will be other issues. If this is an example of the after sales service of your dealer, it doesn't bode well. These blatant defects plus the microwave should have been dealt with prior to acceptance. There have been comments in the boating community within the last year about MH's reluctance to come to the party.
Why did you accept the boat with this defect?
Don't spin your wheels with the dealer. Contact MH directly re your warranty issue. Good luck- you will need it!

Sorry to hear that Hunter is dragging their feet about the wall paper. Perhaps a professional wallpaper hanger could look at it and evaluate what is going on. If it looks like an installation problem you could pass the details to Hunter. The spots could be due to mold from moisture that was on a poorly prepared bulkhead or on the wall paper from improper storage. Another issue is did they use wallpaper that can withstand the marine environment. This maybe an expensive fix. Armed with the right information from a professional with further discussion with both the dealer and Hunter may resolve the issue to your satisfaction. I would also ask them why they decided to install wallpaper over teak too.

Sounds like a good idea about restoring back to just teak. Also did the microwave ever work?

Teak

I was told when I was at the Hunter factory in 07 that my H-36
was one of the last o7 boats using teak and they switched to cherry
to save money and cherry was less costly so my question is why would
they use more costing teak and than cover it up.
Doesn't sound like that is what they did so let's get the story straight
and try pulling the plug out and than plug it back in and that is what happen to me once not on the boat but the microwave stop working and purchased
a new one and than found out about replugging and it started working fine.

Nick,

According to this Newsletter David Marlow, the new owner of Marlow Hunter, is growing his own forest of teak trees.

There is either a $14k option for a teak interior, or you get it as well with the 40th anniversary edition package. The standard interior is cherry. Hunter uses engineered laminates for their cherry and teak walls and furniture. Solid teak is used in certain areas. I doubt that there is teak under the wallpaper. I'll check mine out this week.

It really doesn't matter what kind of wood or veneer was used. Anything would be preferable. The question I still can't wrap my head around having to ask is why anyone would put wallpaper on a boat.

just curious - is it white with pretty little blue anchors? Floral? Unicorns?

The wallpaper is an off-white and only above chair rail height. It is actually quite sharp looking, brightens the interior and is reminiscent of Herreshoff interiors.

It's not really a "wallpaper" but more likely a vinyl covering. Several of the builders are using the same type of treatment.

More information on the Microwave.
The microwave is a Franklin Chef. It is a popular model for the RV folks. It was all together when I looked at the boat before I made the purchase, but when it was delivered, (it was trailered down to Southern MD fro NY), the motor had dropped out for the turn-table. It otherwise does work.
I am looking for microwaves that I can purchase that is the same size. I will take a look to see if this is a quick fix.
The move to southern Maryland was done on my nickel, so I expect the cost to fix or replace will fall on me.

Checked my wallpaper yesterday. No stains or spots. A little sloppy in the installation in a couple of spots. Some of the "sideliner" fabric is buckling in both the forward and aft staterooms. Dealer will remedy this before commissioning.

The microwave in mine is a Haier. I can get you the model number if you wish.

fredanderson2000: Your dealer should be able to get a replacement microwave for you unless the size of the opening has changed. Those small appliances have an incredibly short life cycle and can be a problem, but since the model is still in production it shouldn't be a problem. If that doesn't work out for any reason let us know, we should be able to get one for you.

Update on the splotching of the interior vinyl:
Working with the dealer and Marlow Hunter to get this remedied. Because this is not a regular issue Hunter has, they do not have a canned fix. I am working with a cabinet maker/master carpenter. He is working with the dealer and the dealer is working with Hunter. We had a conference call a few days ago with all the parties. The folks at the hunter mill and support (both named Ed) were direct and to the point - they want to get the problem fixed. More later.
