Revolutionary period nautical books-another hijacking...
Acquired an e-book reader recently and found that there are a number of nautical books in the public domain (free-no purchase necessary) that date back to the age of square riggers and the transition to steam.
The ones I have found to be the most interesting so far are by Willis J. Abbot entitled "The Naval History of the United States-volumes 1 & 2". I found them in the common "e-pub" format. I'm about 3/4 through the first volume and have found it facinating history, much in detail and not well known. Joshua Slocum and Robert Dana are other free download authors among others out there. Lots of "trashy" romance novels out there too--LOL!
I download books from my local library or from other internet-accessed sources to my laptop, then use "Calibre" software (freeware) to manage my e-book library. It can convert non-locked (DRM copyright protection file formating) books to one of the common reader formats that my reader can accept (each reader maker has its own proprietary format--like the old Betamax/VHS wars. Each reader can "read" several common formats, but not that of their direct competitors).
I then use Calibre to transfer the book from the PC file location to the reader itself by USB cable. You can get around the wifi issue and the subsequent ads this way.
Hope this info is helpfull as it's getting me through a lousy east coast winter between GOB issues!
Come on Spring!
