I visit this board often and have read much about the Universal M-25 problems and related component issues. Granted, outside of the older Atomic 4, the M-25 is the most popular engine installed by Catalina, but what of the M-18 (2 cylinder) engine? It was used for a brief time before the M-25 was introduced as standard equipment. I never read of owners complaints or issues. It would benefit all of us M-18 powered folks of any problems encountered with this engine and/or its components. I for one as an owner of an M-18 with 478 hours clocked, have yet to have any issues. I have a 1984 C27 with a m18,and love it.No problems yet, only 600 hours.I also do all of my own maintance,It's pretty simple and you should get to know your engine

No problems, just loud. 86 Catalina 27 #6247, 550 hrs. 6 knots at 3/4 throttle. .5 gallons per hour of fuel.

I repowered with a used M-18. Runs great. Eventually you'll want to watch for mixing elbow corrosion and wiring harness corrosion that can affect starting. But those are issues that come up with age. Like my mechanic told me when I bought the engine used "she's a runner!" Enjoy. Check out the link!
