Any Ham's Out There???

Ok, I’ll admit it. I enjoy working my ham radio after a good day of sailing. I think I installed an ICOM M802 on the boat for the ham operation as I did for the marine SSB. And I’m sure there are many more like me out there on boats and on this site. The only thing I have not been able to find is a good marine SSB and maritime mobile ham forum.
I thought I would see if there are others with the same interest out there. I started a social group for marine SSB and ham radio. If interested, sign up!

I have an Icom 2m transceiver installed in my Morgan 415 Out Island. Since I've added a bonding plate, I get awesome coverage here in northeastern AL.

The PO of my boat paid to have all new rigging made for me. I was supposed to get an insulated back stay. They overlooked it when they made the rigging. It would have been nice for an HF transceiver. I guess it will have to wait a year or two.

Interesting that only licensed ham operators responded. I looking at the post, maybe I skewed it by using "ham" in the title, but it does kind of go along with what I hear on the air. Almost all my contacts have been on the ham bands and and only a few have been on the marine SSB channels.

What I was thinking of doing is contacting eveyone that responded via this site's private message system. My intent is to see if we can set up a group to help each other with any issues. I know as a new ham, I have a lot to learn. Can't think of a better way than to share notes with others.

New ham but not ready yet. I am just putting a shack together and the 2M for the boat will have to wait until next spring. It is tarped for the winter.

I suspect most folks who have an SSB onboard also obtained a ham license to get the max use out of it.

Don, that was my guess as well.

I'm hoping that we can keep it moving along. I sent a private message to everyone that had responded to this post, inviting them to participate in the "SSB and Ham Operator" group. Seemed like the most logical place to keep discussions going on.

For those new to the site or new to the new site, Social Groups got added with the new site upgrades, and seem to be very useful for sharing comments and answering questions that relate to boaters with a common interest. You can access it from the "Forums" tab, and is the fourth link from the bottom.

Off to Catalina Island in the morning, make that Saturday morning. I'll be on the air if anyone wants to give a holler. Just send a Private Message if you want and let me know. Private messages from this site make it to my Blackberry. Just don't tell my boss. I told him I have no cell coverage out at the island.
