Any H20 owner? I need info

I guys, I don't have my boat yet (coming) this week.
I need to know the transom hight where the engine bolt on.

I can put my hand on a nice (good deal $$$) Suzuki long shaft (20) 6hp 4 stroke but I'm not sure of the transom height where the engine hook up.

So if any of you with an H20 could tell you the measurement ???

Basically I'm trying to know if a 20in shaft would be long enough

Hi Ben,

I will have that info for you in a minute...okay...the height of the transom where it is notched for the motor is 17.5 inches...I have had my H20 for a year and have a lot of good things to say about her so far...she is really a big dinghy!...but has lots more room and stowage and she's fairly fast...especially when she is loaded down a bit with gear..she does better than you would think. I will check this forum frequently...I had not noticed this "small Hunter" forum until today. Have fun out there...Morgan

Many thanks morgan!!! it mean that most 20in long shaft engine would work fine.... the picture above is not my boat. On this one it look like the owner as a extra long 25in shaft.

Very nice of you... i feel alone with a Hunter 20, it seem like it's a pretty rare boat. Thanks for your comments on this one. My friend (who i bought it from) was in love with that boat, but a 28 foot was given to him for free so....

If you have a few picture of your boat send it to me!!! I'm so curious!

Glad you got my reply. I know how you feel...there seemed to be no one else with this boat so it's nice to hear of someone else with one. One was for sale on craislist awhile back in my area(west coast FLA). I have had to do some repairs and still have a ton of projects to do.us I just took her out of the water a couple days ago after a 4-day camping trip with my 12-year old son to CHARLOTTE harbour..we had a good trip and " Eagle ray" performed well. SHE is in the backyard right now and she'll be getting some new carpet inside and new electrical system...along with some other upgrades but I miss having her in the water nearby where despite having to check her status at anchor almost everyday I could sail her whenever I liked...

Oh...trying to type on a Nintendo wii is just a hassle..now that I am back on a regular PC let me say..it is nice to meet you Ben and I will try to get you some pics ..my comp recently crashed and I am trying to get my pics re-loaded into the new one..any pics of your H20 would also be appreciated. Thanks and good luck with that new motor..I have a 2 stroke 5hp tohatsu on "Eagle Ray... seems to be more than enough power..thanks and hope to compare notes in the future...Morgan

This is funny, one reason i bought a small boat is to sail in FL in winter time, i always spend a few week in the winter in Fort De Soto campground (south of St-Pete). An other reason is that I'm use to small vehicle:

This VW camper as a modified 210hp Subaru engine, and if it's not enough i will put a 270hp engine in it so i can tow my boat anywhere.

So camping in the H20 will be nothing special for us as to size

ben.. Great job on posting some pics so quickly...you have a sweet-looking H20 there sir...I think you got a good deal I am sure...mine unfortunately did not come down to me in as impeccable condition...I actually bought it last July for the tidy sum of $200.00 and have probably sunk over a thousand dollars into it since....I probably need to spend another 2 grand or so to get the boat into proper condition what with needing a new set of sails soon and needing to get the iron 400 lb keel sanded and re-painted or possibly covered with fiberglass. I have had to re-build the dinette table from scratch and though heavy it makes a great table and doubles of course as the main berth settee. If you spent less than say 4 or 5 grand then you did well is all I can say..they seem to have sold online in the condition yours is in for up to 6 thousand or more so keep her up and you have a great investment..I think boats this size are very desirable and their value should hold once they are in good shape and maintained thus...BTW...Fort Desoto is a very cool area with lots of places to "get away" as I am sure you know...If you are lucky enough to visit these areas during the weekdays you are really in for some solace and open space without droves of humankind. Hi again, 1800$ is what i have paid (with trailer and the small 2.5hp), my friend took good care of this boat and invested over 3.5K4 on it in the past 2-3 years. The boat sailed 2-3 time a year only and that for the past 10 years, before that, it was in a warehouse for about 10 years. The keel rope system as been heavily modifiy, the steel rope is now in the back of the keel. This is a mod that my friend uncle did because he was tired of replacing the rope. Upholstery was all done last year.

You know my tohatsu 5hp is a longshaft model but i am not sure of the exact length..I don't think I am all sure how they measure these or which points they are measured from..if you know or anyoneelse does I would like to know..Thanks..btw...Ben, you did indeed get a very good deal IMHO on a sweet little boat who deserves more mention than she gets...I'd like to know more about her designers..my model has been re-fitted so the cable and winch is in the rear now...not sure if it was ever set up with the rope though there is lots of eveidence to support this..I have been under the impression that the compression post winchbox on mine was left in there after last minute changes to design..as if they knew by this time that the rope pulley system was not working well...I should also find out how many of these were made and which number mine is....cheers!.. As for the winch, of what my friend told me, they where design with this one in the front, but it was a design flaw. Many have relocated this one in the back.

Ben..Thanks for the link to that outboard info page...It was educational for me...I am really happy with the tohatsu 5 hp 2-stroke I have but would love to experiment with a larger motor up to about 15 hp. the tidal currents where I sail are not usually very strong and the 5 hp motor I have is more than adequate for those times when your going against a tide. Someday I would like to attempt some weather window runs where I need to cover up to 50-60 miles in one day and for that reason would like a motor that could give a good push up to around 7 knots without really overtaxing the motor and for that I would need at least a 9.9 I think. The very flat hull of a Hunter 20 lends itself to a fairly low planing hull speed but I think that we would have to have a 15 hp motor or better to really get on plane.The speeds on plane would probably be at least 10-12 knots which is exciting but almost weird to contemplate with our type of boat. The gains are that I would feel much more comfortable going off shore and would venture out further into the Gulf than the 3-4 mile limit I do now. I would still stay inside 20 miles or so with the boat as it is configured right now. Obviously, excellent weather windows have to be in effect as well and some
transom modification would be needed before anything over...say... 8 hp goes on the back of my boat.Fun ideas to think about anyway...I just read a blog from a couple who took a Macgregor 26 from Bellingham,Washington to Juneau and back...the 50 hp motor and planing speeds allowed them to do this kind of run..especially with the currents one encounters in the northwest...makes the idea of a run out to the Dry Tortugas in a Hunter 20 not all that crazy...methinks..

That's is good info, it's funny again, i have searching for an engine for over 2 weeks...
From 4 to 8hp 4 cycle, i was searching for a used one but they are hard to come.
Yesterday i had it so I convince myself to buy a new 6hp... BUT, wile looking again on localy i found 2 used nice one, a 96 Honda 8hp 4s long shaft 1000$ and a 2000 Evinrude 9.9 extra long shaft electric start, bothare real clean and i was able to lower the price of the 9.9 to 1200$. I have read somewhere that those 9.9 where Suzuki engine????

2 thing bug me about the Evinrude, weight and the extra long shaft (25), I'm not sure the shaft will completely come out of the water if it's install on the transom???? I feel the same as you in regard of power on big river or ocean. I will sail on the St-Laurent river and the current are very strong in some area. the thing with the evinrude is that they don't make small size engine anymore, I'm not even sure where they are built??? Bombardier own the company now, but the have a great online part system. The Honda 8hp is a classic, it as been the same for many years (90-2000), even today they still have one (a bit bigger in cc). And Honda is Honda. I have until monday to take a decision. The Honda 8 is a long shaft, the guys tell me it's 22in.
