I am thinking of buying a 1977 Hunter 30 and want to know if there are any generic problems with that boat such as fiberglass blistering,de-laminating, etc.

A few...

I have an 81 H30. After I bought the boat in late 98 I hauled and found many blisters. It may be a product of being in the water year'round in Hawaii but it's worth looking for. Also check the portlights for leaks and where the deck-hull are fitted together. I have seen questions and posts on this forum about mast compression. Haven't seen that one yet. Above all have it surveyed by someone compitent that you trust... Good Luck Dan Is/v Illusions

I have one

Make sure you have the boat surveyed. Look for loose tabbing on bulkheads. Check for oil canning (core rot) in the cabin top, I missed the area under the companionway cover. Check for rot directly under the mast, the raised area has plywood coring on top of the regular cabin top. The area the mast sits on should be flat, not dished. Check the archives to read about problems below the compression post. Mine was filled with epoxy, so I don't know whats down there. Check the standing rigging, find out if it is original. I think the boat is great. Check the web for comparable pricing.

'77 h30

Brian, I have owned my '77 30 for 4 years and have been very pleased with her. As with all older boats, a comprehensive survey is a must. Peter is correct about the mast. Mine has a slight dish at the mast base. I know there is some rot and will have to be attending to that in the near future, but so far hasn't given me any problems. If the 110 electrical system is original it should be rewired to ABYS standards. If it surveys out to your standards you should have a fine, seaworthy vessel. I sail the west coast of Fl. in mine and have encountered all sorts of unkind weather and have never felt unsure of my boat. I also spent many years in the Norwich, New London area so am attune to the weather you will be challenged with. I say go for it. Also, check the boat reviews forum. Good Luck. You can contact me at: rbriere@pasco.k12.fl.us if I can be of any more assistance. Roland S/V Fraulein II

HEY BRIAN, SHE'S 24 YRS OLD, STILL FLOATING

ACCORDING TO PRACTICAL SAILOR, THE HUNTER IS A CHEVY, THE CATALINA A FORD, WELL I LIKE CHEVY'S, BUT LETS FACE FACTS, THE BOAT'S 24 YEARS OLD, I'D WORRY, HOW OLD IS THE STANDING RIGGING, AND THE WIRING IN THE BOAT, SCREW THE GENERIC STUFF, SHE'S STILL FLOATING, THAT SAYS SHE'S BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK A FEW TIMES, BESIDES SHE'S A CHERUBINI, SO WHAT'S TO WORRY ABOUT,, YOUR MAST MAY FALL DOWN TOMORROW.
