I'm looking to purchase a small motor for a new 9'6" dinghy and am considering the Tohatsu 3 1/2 hp 2 stroke. Does anyone have any feedback on this product, positive or negative? Appreciate the help :) Regards, -Jim- s/v Forever

That Motor

is sold with the Mariner, and Nissan labels also, I have a 3.2 (with a neutral shifter) that we have used three seasons, it has worked without flaw!

I have one

I bought it for the wife for xmas for a small dinghy that we will use to get the dogs ashore. I've had no problems with it, but.... The next motor I will get will have forward/neutral and maybe reverse control. The model that I bought is alway in gear. I also prefer to have a throttle control on the control arm, the Tohatsu has a slide switch on the body of the motor. Please don't get me wrong, I am happy with the motor and it is (was) very reasonably priced and meets all my needs. It has ample power for the wife and I in an 8' dinghy and always starts. With it always being in gear, make sure to buy extra shear pins as one "oops" and you will need to replace the shear pin. Regards. Bruce Neon Moon

Engine

I have this engine. It runs great and I bought it on-line and paid about $200 less than I saw in any store. They make 2 models. Get the one with Forward and Neutral.

Grrrrreat Engine

I have had one (Mercury-branded) for 4 years. It is 3.5hp and has a neutral shift. Great engine. A bit cold-blooded in that it takes a choke anytime it's been off over 10 minutes. But, it's a one-pull start. Pushes a 10' hard dink with four adults plenty fast. Also, it's oh-so-light which makes it a breeze to put on and remove and flush out. I had a 2.5 (Nissan-branded) for 10 years. It too was a great engine. Unless you have a need to plane, it's all you need. Rick D.
