Any experience with shaft hookup...

I am installing a new stainless 1" shaft to my Yanmar 1GM, and, am wondering the best way to hook the thing up. I'm still trying to get the old coupling unfrozen so I can hookup the new coupling. Question: should I install the coupling first, and then hookup the shaft, or, should I install the coupling directly to the shaft and then hook it up to the engine. I guess in the end, we're talking about lining up 4 machine bolts(1st scenario), or lining up the shaft so that the dimples line up to the two bolts on the coupling. Make sense? Any responses would be greatly appreciated as this has been worrying me all winter long. Then, I get to tackle the damn rudder.

Shaft - coupling

First of all; check the archives. Therse's pil;es of information on this subject from uncountable discussions. Briefly: Place a spacer at the end of the old shaft and use the coupling bolta as jeck-screws topush the shaft out of the coupling. clean up the shaft and or coupling with emery paper, mount the coupling on the shaft. Support the shaft centered in the opening in the hull and align the ENGINE to the coupling. You will have to adjust the engine on all planes to get it to mate properly. You're done when the difference is within .003" between the faces of the coupling. Have fun.
