I see lots of posts for the Columbia 8.3 (1977) as being a solid/reliable cruiser. But what about as a decent club racer? I'm not saying that it could challenge a J30, but does anybody out there club race their Columbia 8.3? I'm close to buying one, but besides cruising with my family, I would like to club race for fun (JAM series) in a couple of years.

Nice boat
I raced against a columbia 8.3 with a soling, in light wind I had an advantage of less displacement. Check out www.image-ination for performance ratio's. But being in a stripped down club boat exposed to the elements, that 8.3 looked like a real sweet boat, and actually has a higher hull speed than the soling.

Here's a soling
This is a soling. I learned how to sail on these boats out in boston harbor. They are alot of fun, very uncomfortable to sail, but sometimes you need to lean over and get your butt in the drink!
