Any B361 owners use 6V GC batteries?

Hello All,

I'm looking for any other B361 owners who might use 6V golf cart batteries in series for starter and house purposes. since they're a bit taller than 12V 4D batteries, I hoping someone can confirm whether or not the 6V batteries will fit in the same spaces occupied by the 4D batteries. According to the spec sheets of some of the GC batteries I've been looking at, they're just under 11.5 inches in height.

On my boat one 4D (which serves as both starter and house) is forward of the engine under the steps, and the other 4D house battery is under the bed in the aft cabin.

You can easily use the 6V GC's for your house battery. I have used them for years on several boats over that time. You don't need something that complicated for your starter. A normal marine starting battery would be cheaper and lighter.

My experience is that taking care of them, I expect a 6 or 7 year life on the GC batteries.

I have 2 6V in the compartment in front of the engine I use as the house bank. I tried putting them in the aft cabin but they are about a1/2" too high. I do plan on going 4 6V at some point so will need to figure out how to make them fit. Adding a 1/2" strip along the top of the vertical divider and the strip along the wall to the cockpit locker will likely work.

Thanks Randy. I was hoping to put the two 6V batteries in the aft cabin under the floor, but based on what you report it sounds like they may not fit. It's encouraging to hear they'll likely fit in front of the engine under the steps though. What do you use for your starting battery, and do you have that in the aft cabin?

Thinking of doing the same on my B323, but it looks better to secure the spacers to the plywood, rather than the dividers?

We have a 361 and replaced both 4D batteries with four 6V golf carts. Two in front of the engine, in series, are Trojan T145, ~260Ah each. Then two more in the port side lazarette in series. Photo attached.

I replaced one 4D with the 6V because it went dry. The other 4D was still good so I used it as the staring/ spare and left it in the aft. It finally died last year shortly before a 2 week cruise so I just replaced it with a deep cycle from wal mart. When I retire in a couple of years and spend more time away from the dock my plan is to replace the two 6V I have now with four 6V. 2 in the aft and 2 under the steps, all in the same bank and a separate staring battery in the aft as well.

I have a group 27 for my starter in front of the engine. I have 4 golf cart 6v batteries in the port lazarrete under the microwave for the house bank. All batteries are secured in ABYC battery cases. This has been working for me since 2010 with no problems at all. Batteries are easy to inspect too.

Most 361s I've seen, including mine, have a bit of a list to port. Did this affect yours or did you need to do anything to counter the additional weight on the port side?
