So the problem is relying on the anti-freeze and/or improper use of anti-freeze ... not a problem when components are drained and left dry. Well, the engine is a different story, I agree, but still improper use of anti-freeze.

Drained and left dry is not always so, unfortunately. There are some boats that can be blown out and others that don't do well due to the complexity of the plumbing.. I drain tanks and suck AF into the lines only. I also check the dilution level of what comes out of the faucet. In the spring you just purge the lines of AF before reconnecting...

Winterizing needs to be done properly whether you blow out or use AF. I have repaired thousands in freeze up damage this spring all due to improper winterizing practices.... In some cases it was to save a buck, in others a lack of understanding of what constitutes a "proper" winterizing procedure..

I've followed the drain and suck into lines strategy noted here, although I purge the lines with water from the tank AFTER reconnecting... :-D

Both winterizing and commissioning was quick and easy, and more importantly, successful. This with a full hot and cold system, with lines that have inaccessible low points where they pass under the sole from head junctions to galley.

I agree that any residual water in the system voids can create a problem. I also agree that blowing out a system is no 100% guarantee all the water is gone.

But, to assume I have a simpler boat? I have 40 years experience in petro-chem, pharmaceutical, civil & nuclear mechanical piping. The same rules apply, only the systems change. I know how to completely drain a system of any type of fluid, slurry etc. So, it's really not a question of simple, but rather the correct method.

Sorry, Cpt. Ron, but I'L was reffering to the prior post, ot to you. We re typing atbthe same time.

Our design experince is very similar and I agree with the above. A pity boat designers don't get winter or storage.
