Anti Ciphon Vent

The anti ciphon vent on the raw water circuit of my Yanmar 3GM30F has clogged with salt crystals again. When this happens the valve in the vent fails to close when the engine is operating, spewing salt water all over the starboard side of my engine! To prevent this from happening again, I've put a hose over the nipple on the vent. Now the big question is where to run the hose. The easiest place to run the hose is into the bilge through the section of the engine pan near the stuffing box. I have two problems with that. First I don't like to put anything into the bilge on purpose. Second the vent is placed high above the engine to get it above the water line. I'm concerned that by running the hose into the bilge which is obviously below the waterline, I've negated the effectiveness of the vent and created a potentially dangerous situation on my boat. Running the hose into the cockpit or overboard in some other fashion aren't easy or cosmetically attractive on the Hunter 335, but may be necessary. Any advice will be appreciated. through-hull

Lots of us have had this problem. I have the hose from my recently-installed vetus unit flowing into the bilge at the moment, but it came with a neat little through-hull fitting. Next season, I'm going to run the hose through the head storage locker (adjacent to the starboard side of the engine room) out to the hull, and (gulp) drill a hole in my boat for a through-hull about 2.5 feet above the water line. This is on a 336. Paul sv Escape Artist h336

Maintenance item.

Gary: You may want to check out the Vetus site. One of their tips is that the anti syphon loop needs to be flushed periodically for maintenance. If you do this, you probably won't need to worry about water in the bilge.

Try a Vetus

I installed a Vetus on the engine and generator. They have a connection to the vent to take any leakage to the bilge or thru-hull. By the way, yell over to Lummi and say hello to our son Shawn. He works on boats and you might contact him for help if you need some.

Thanks

Thanks for the input guys. And Bob, I'll be sure to holler at Shawn next time we go past Lummi on the way to Bellingham. Where does he live there? Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335
