was wondering about VHF antennas....is it better to have a mast mounted or deck mounted antenna for this radio ....and is it wise to have a combo style for say VHF,AM and FM or is it better to have them stand alone on there on dedication......

regards

VHF is line of sight so the higher the antenna is installed the farther the radio will transmit and receive. For music and news we went to XM radio as the programing offers better selections and the signal out to sea is stronger.

If you want to use the same antenna for both VHF Radio and Am/FM Radio, then you need to use an Automatic Antenna Switch so that when you transmit on the VHF it automatically disconnects the AM/FM antenna cable. If you don't want to use an Automatic Antenna Switch (about $45 - $50), the use a seperate antenna for the AM/FM - even an in-the-cabin flexible Dipole Antenna.

Marine vhf antennas are also good for receiving comercial FM radio, xmitting and receiving on the 2 meter ham band, and for xmitting and receiving AIS transponder signals. Buy an automatic antenna switch--you wont regret it.
