The marina where I store the boat is gravel over rocky soil.  This is the North shore of Long Island.  The yard offered to chock the boat as high as I wanted, or to dig the hole.  Not knowing exactly how high it needed to be, I opted for the hole.  It wasn't bad.  Once I removed the steering pulley and preping the propshaft for removal, it took only about 45 minutes to dig the hole, drop the rudder,pullthe shaft and replace the rudder.
