another way to get it up

Every so often someone posts a question asking how to stand their mast. This picture may not be worth a thousand words, but heres a few answers. the ladder is 28 feet (not working length) the 4x4 extension post is 8 feet the upper block is 24 feet above deck. the mast is 36 feet it took less than two hours to rig, step mast and knock down again. One of the helpers/crew was skeptical and argued for a week afterward what a stupid system it was. Those of you out there that see the simplicity and strength are welcome to crew or captain my boats any day. The rest of you, "don't touch anything". Next we ramp launched using a tongue dolly and a 50 foot rope (walk in the park) TJ

What Ever Works...

What ever floats your boat, but I've seen much simpler methods for a boat this size....

dangerous

Sometimes a skipper needs to listen to his crew. I'm surprised the boatyard would would aloow this to be done on their property.

If you waited till the clouds got a little bit darker and the lighting stated it would wipe out your kind. DUMB IDEA. What if the ladder kicked out and hit that gas eating SUV and the mast fell onto the deck through the deck and into the head below, speaking of head where in the hell was yours.*butt

Ladders aren't built for that kind of loading

It could have kicked, folded, or twisted. You weren't smart, just very lucky!

??????????????????????????????????????????????

With that many people and that sized boat, why did'nt you just set the base of the mast in the step and walk it up by hand???????????????????????????????????

Simple-

y amazing. "it took less than two hours to rig, step mast and knock down again." Sorry to sound overly critical but you were relatively lucky it didn't end in disaster. "One of the helpers/crew was skeptical and argued for a week afterward what a stupid system it was." His skepticism was justified and relatively sane but on the other hand, if he were the saner individual, why would he have stayed in the area of that type of work?

Not the Greatest Way

Two ideas to hep maybe. Two ladders and make an "A" frame. Or put it in the water first and then use the masts of two boats one on either side to pull it up. It is tough to argue with success, but I have always done better by being lucky not smart so who knows.

much better ladders

You can see that I have much better ladders than you had. Mine were proberly supported and not overloaded. The scary part was when I had to go up the ladders and attach a bridle with six seperate suction cups to the exterior glass so that those ropes you see could all be removed with me still under the window (5ft x 10ft). If it had not worked, I guess I might have been famous to fans of the Darwin Award.

Trailer Winch

I can step my mast alone in about 25 minutes on my trailer..my mast crutch has a roller (so ican roll it backward by hand), i use an 8' 2x4 to hold the jib halyard above themast, latch the trailer winch to th halyard, and winch away. little wire stays attached at about 7 feet up the mast keep the whole shebang centered. the problem is stupid me apparently cracked my forestay roller (CDI) last time it came down. i fiberglassed it...anyone have experience repairing one of them?

Well, lets not be too hard on TJ.

Sure, he's likely to get a Darwin Award Honorable Mention, but he reminds me more of my dear late uncle. My uncle liked to buy stuff that was rejected by the market place. Stuff like Packard limousines, Hudson's, (not the cool ones, but the 1957 model that AMC built) and of course, his famous, used, mid 80's Oldsmobile diesel sedan. Horrible. Oops, I left out his Studebaker. And he didn't keep those cars so as to reap the nostalgia resale value. Nope, drove them 'till they dropped. It didn't take long and he didn't care. He thought that his choices were good just because others didn't like them and they were CHEAP. And maybe TJ is doing much the same thing; rebelling against the status-quo. Why pay for a crane when you can beat the bastards with your own Rube Goldberg?

Big crane in the background

I think I would have parked the boat pointing at that huge crane in the background. Pinned the mast in the tabernacle, climbed the crane with a line connected to the head stay and pulled it up. >Those of you out there that see the simplicity and strength are welcome to crew or captain my boats any day.< If there are other devices on your boat like that one, I'll stay ashore thank you. I don't see the

increased danger as others have noted. There are more elegant solutions as George and Mike and Benny have mentioned but if you want to use your gin pole for other activitys when not sailing, the math works for me.
