The compression post attaches with two bolts to the frame at the back of the V-berths. The bolts can wallow out wood enough to let the compression post sag, letting the crown of the cabin flatten a bit. The fix is easy by sistering a vertical brace from the sole up the post. I did this on a 1978 16 I owned years ago in such a manner that I had a notch at the top from which to hang whatever. If memory serves there's an offset that required me to laminate two pieces of 3/4" board together, leaving the outer one an inch or so higher than the inner one.
BTW, I just bought a very clean 1983 Compac 16 to return to sailing after over a decade of being on the hard. We don't own waterfront any more and I'm too cheap to pay storage, so scaling down to the 16 was necessary -- but I loved the '78 and am again happy as a pig in . . . a wallow.
