While out sailing earlier this week I happened to look at the bulb on the fuel hose to the OB.



This new with only one season- last summer. Merc dealer said it was from ethanol in the gas permeating through the rubber. Sounds as good as any other explanation. Good thing I caught it when I did. All it takes is a pinhole for air to enter the fuel line and you ain't going anywhere. At least it's an easy fix and I need to buy some spares and keep 'em handy.

The corn lobby has pretty much eliminated gas as a practical fuel for boats. The petroleum industry loves it because it takes 1-2 gallons of diesel fuel to produce a gallon of ethanol. Wonder why diesel has gotten so expensive?

Ethanol in older outboards or new ones

I have a 2008 tohatsu 8hp 4 cycle. I wouldnt call that an old motor. When
I bought the motor the dealer told me do not use fuel over 30 days old.
I didnt pay any attention to him I should have. After about 6 weeks the motor
started running rough. A few days after that It quit all together I brought it into the dealer. The carburetor and plugs among other things were all gummed up. The bill to clean up the engine and fuel tank was around $300

I learned my lesson No more than 30 days period. I also add a capful of stabil to 3 Gals And finally I run all the fuel out of the engine at the end of the day.

i have heard that the ethanol will rot out the bulbs and then clog the carb, jets etc. i have been told that you should not use a black bulb, but apparently they have gray ones that are resistant to the ethanol. that goes for the fuel lines also.

they also have a blue colored stabilizer that is for ethanol, instead of the red. i used that on my power boat last fall and it ran great in the spring. the previous two years it would back fire and run rough except at low speed until i ran about a half tank of gas through it driving around at high idle speeds.

My fuel line is starting to look like that. I really need to replace it as soon as possible.
This Ethanol is nothing but garbage and they should do away with it but no presidential candidate is likely to step up and say this for fear of losing Iowa in the run offs.

We're getting it from both ends by pinhead politicians who are only out to make a buck and gather votes.
