Another Stays'l boom ?

I'm stuck out here in the middle of the pacific (not too bad af a place if I have to be stuck). I've previously ask a lot of stays'l boom questions on this forum and have much great info and photos in return. (Thanks again!)

I am now down to manufacturing the piece that fits over the stay, that kind of acts like a goose-neck for the boom. I am attaching a picture of the bracket that someone posted for me. It's been very helpful. My question is this:

What is the black material that sticks out of the top of the fitting in the picture, that goes between the fitting and the stay? It looks like it might be some kind of rubber?... plastic?... or nylon?... that acts like a bushing.

On my boom the bushing material seems to be some kind of soft metal - lead? aluminum? I think you can use just about anything as long as it is softer than the stainless steel stay (you wouldn't want that to wear!) You should be careful about the galvanic series though, as your alumininum staysail gooseneck could sacrifice itself to a more noble metal (such as copper) in the presence of salt water. Or you could use plastic and avoid the issue all together. Good luck and remember to let us how it works out in the long run.

Coupla' weeks, I hope, and I can check. But I don't think my gooseneck has a liner. Like Jim suggests, maybe you can slice a length of plastic hose to slip over the stay for a no metal-to-metal bushing. If you use your staysail as little as I do it will last many years. That picture is different from mine. The gooseneck is the same but the boom end is unusual. Picture is what we really need.

Thanks for the input. I kind of like the 'some kind of plastic' idea to avoid any galvanic corrosion problems. I guess I was thinking along those lines, but wanted to get some other opinions.

I'll definitely post some pictures whenever I get this thing done.

I don't post to this forum too much these days, but I don't know what I'd do without you folks to ask questions and bounce ideas off of now and then.

Ed, Well . . . it's a long story. Short version: We did some inter-island cruising a while back, then ended up in Honolulu (Oahu Island). It's been a good place to do some major work on the boat. I had to have a liver transplant about 6 months ago. That kind of slowed me down. I worked up until a year ago. I have a year's post transplant treatment coming up that that's pretty mean--but I've been working on the boat, slowly but surely. My goal is to be heading south in about 14 months a couple months after my treatment is finished. Nice to hear from you! I always appreciate your feedback. Morrie

There is no "liner" on the inside of my staysail gooseneck. Could the protrusion in the photo be the top of the staysail swage?

PO did not have staysail rigged, but had the pieces. Nothing inside the folded gooseneck piece. I'm with Sandpiper. Looks like the top of the babystay swedge.
