Another sanitation question

......I thought my description would be difficult to follow:
If you have a wye which is connected to the thru hull and the holding tank, when the loo is pumped out the waste will take the path of least resistance, and, since the thru hull is below the water line will have more resistance than the holding tank inlet (assuming the holding tank is not full), therefore the waste will tend to flow to the holding tank, and not overboard.

I don't think you want a simple "Y" in that set-up, you want a Y-valve, so there is only one operating path at a time, depending on how the valve is set: for overboard discharge or for discharge to the holding tank.

Aha...now I get what you meant. That's possible, but I've never heard of it happening. It does make another good case for a y-VALVE instead of just a wye or a tee, though. However, most production boat builders have always liked wyes because they cost 'em a fraction of the price of a y-valve, so it's likely they'll continue to use 'em.

The Y valve was part of the original installation.
The macerator pump I have already had to overhaul, & yes, not a nice job!!

When (it's not very likely to be "if") it needs work again, replace it with an electric diaphragm pump. More than twice the price of a macerator but it doesn't take too many replacement impellers to make up the difference. Diaphragm pumps can run dry without harm, no impeller to get stuck to its housing and and fail if you don't always rinse it out after each use (and who actually does that?), much higher quality materials overall (no rusted screws to leak)...they last for a decade or longer with -0- repairs. The Dometic/SeaLand T-Series pump has always been the top rated one...I had one on one of my own boats that was 11 years old and still working fine when I sold the boat.
