"...Thursday night when they decided to board the 22-foot-sailboat...It wasn't immediately clear why the boat capsized. None of the six men and four women was wearing a life vest when the boat capsized, although floatation devices were on board, Bull said."

Seems pretty clear.

Hmm, might have something to do with OVERLOADING the boat with the keel up? Just maybe????

Its not rocket science...

Sorry, had to say it, though tragic, none of us are safe from momentary lapses of judgement.

I don't know who was skipper of that disaster waiting to happen. He best have a damn good lawyer cause I see a big run in with the man in his future. Sad cause it tarnishes us all.

Sometimes you hear of a crowd boogying on a second story residential deck and having it collapse dropping 75-100 people 20 feet.

Gosh overloading a boat isn't like rocket science or anything.

I am still stuck trying to figure out how the hell the all fit before the capsize? I have had 8 adults on board my 35 footer and it was fine, I could not imagine something 13 feet shorter with 2 more people

Com'on Dparila,
Remember when you were 20? .. If you and a few other guys who were partying could have talked 4 (also partying) girls into going on a midnight sailboat ride ... and a few more guys came along for good measure, you probably would have done the same thing, regardless of the size of the boat.
Very sadly, this particular, " hay, lets go do something crazy" incident ended very badly...
I would have to admit that I was involved in a few at that age that, " but for the grace of God", could have ended just as badly... weren't you????

The words ,"Hey ya'll watch this!" usually preceed a ride in an ambulance.

I owned a V-22. There is no way in Hell I would put 10 people aboard and go out on the open water. 4-5 was the absolute max. Someone commented that the keel may have been up. Good thought. I was at MDR and watched a group of 8, half kids, leave the dock in an open 16 foot power boat. Not a life jacket to be seen. No excuse for common sense. I can attest that Ventures are good boats having owned three of 'em. Fair Winds and full Sails...

This happened right near where we sail on the James River. Lots of police boats out Saturday, we really didn't know why because I try not to watch the news on the weekends. Very sad and unfortunately the currents are very strong so I think the likelihood of finding anyone is pretty slight.
It should never have happened, that's for sure.

Too true...many a near miss caused by watch this, or I'll bet we can...! Still the matter of the physics...maybe since they worked for NASA, they had a space time continuum thing going on...you know where the hours between 10pm and 4am compress into ten o two oclock.

Agreed ...
As John said, just because you have degrees doesn't make you intelligent.
And tragically, alcohol makes even the most intelligent, less so.
Only a minute of inattention and too many partying people get on one side of a small boat like that; ... it rolls over,.. and well, the rest is in the news.
Very sadly, the surviving 8 people will all have to live with the memories and realities of that night for the rest of their lives.
My heart goes out to all of them, their families, and friends.

Much larger boats than this have been capsized when all of the passengers rushed to one side to see the whale.
Roger Long can tell you with considerable accuracy how much topside weight it will take to turtle any vessel.
