My 92 has been great, but rudder delam showed up when hauled for the winter...I can't seem to find Foss Foam...are they still around, and if so, are they the best bet for a replacement?

Easy fix

I have an 89 which had some bubbles in the rudder. If they are not too large you can drill a hole top and bottom, let it drain and dry and then fill it with epoxy from the bottom hole till it comes out the top. If the delam is larger a glass repair person can grind it down and do a fiberglas patch. Call Hunter and they can give you the phone number of Foss Foam. Foss told me to cover the rudder with something light or reflective to keep the sun off it when out of the water because that causes the delamination.

Re-glass it

Last spring, the skin on the rudder on my '89 H30 completely detached. At first, it looked like a thin crack down the leading edge, but when the crack was ground to prepare it for repair, the whole skin fell off. Since the foam core was in good condition, this was an easy repair. I hired a local fiberglass guy who re-glassed and gel coated the rudder without removing it from the boat. Boat was ready in time for spring launch. Price was very reasonable compared to replacing the rudder. It still looks good after fall haul out. I never did figure out if the delamination was caused by freezing or heating by the sun. But I'm going to cover the rudder this year before the weather starts to warm up. Many people advise this, especially with dark colored anti-fouling paint.

Foss Foam

Foss Foam 4480 126th Avenue North Clearwater, Florida 33760 813/577-0478 Al Walker I'd recommend you fix the old one if possible. A new one is $1000 - $1200 and I have found their current quality questionable. Barry
