When travelling abroad where 220v 50 hz power is normal, is it due to an adapter that drops a leg to adjust or is there another process in play? I obviously haven't had to deal with the issue yet, but thinking ahead.

Most marina's in the eastern Caribbean (PR to Grenada) have both voltage hook-ups in the slips. Others will loan you a transformers for stepping down the voltage from 220 to 110.

If you are going to Europe you will want to carry your own 220 to 110 transformer.

You have to watch synchronous motors as if you normally run 110v 60hz and then step down 220/240 50hz your motor will run slow. We had this with an a/c cooling pump.
