Log books
Logbooks are kind of a personal journal of your adventures. You can log everything in detail or very little, there is no right or wrong way to keep a log, as many sailors don’t keep any log at all. I personally keep a log, if for nothing else, so that my kids can look back at our adventures later on in life. The type of information that I keep in the log is weather, wave height, wind speed, what sails I ran and how well they worked, and how the day went. I also log whom I met that day. Mainly because I wont remember their names if I don’t. If you log the basics you can look back and remember what worked well and what didn’t. Everyone on the crew has his or her own log as well. My kids have kept a log from when they could only draw pictures, this is more for my enjoyment as they get older. It also gets them into keeping a journal, which they have to do as they get older for school. I even have a log for guests to write in if they so desire. Other than mine, everyone else just use a composition notebook for his or her log. I mainly use a laptop for mine. I have a written log I kept for years, however I find I write more in the computer.
