Another Motor Hoist ?

Rather than hoist my 8 HP outboard and mount to the rail, I thought it would be easier to hoist the motor with the boom and ease it into the huge cockpit locker on the Catalina 309 since the boom will be able to position right over the locker. The boat does have a Spinnaker halyard I could use, just not sure how to go about it.

I would only do this after sailing and towing the dingy for weekly intervals.

Can you recommend a efficient way to accomplish this?

Could you not manage with a 2.2 HP Suzuki?
Then it is only a one handed job.

Actually had a small 2.5 once, your right, nice and easy to lift, but, boring as all hell. Had a 8 hp mariner years ago and sooooooooooooooooooo much more fun.

I am very happy with the 8 hp performance and only need to lift it a couple of times a year. If the task of hoisting the 8 hp becomes to much of a pain, I can always do as before, my wife and I lifting it off the inflatable and storing it in the trunk of the car, quite easy actually.

I am no salty dog and have never tried hoisting the motor, so, I was just asking for advice from those who have done it.

I used an old boomvang secured to the end of the boom to hoist. I have since gone to a 3.5 hp and can one hand it.

Another Motor Hoist

I use a 4:1 purchase block and tackle with a cam cleat to hoist my eight horse Mercury outboard and batteries. I attach it to a boom bail for the main sheet. The block and tackle is actually part of my backstay adjuster so there is plenty of line to extend and reach the water. There are snap shackles at each end so it's quick and easy to relocate.

I have also used two snatch blocks and some line to accomplish the same. One snatch block is attached to the boom bail and the other to the perforated aluminum toe rail to provide a fair lead to the primary self tailing winch. It's a 1:1 setup which uses much less line than the block and tackle arrangement. The outboard end of the boom is supported with the main halyard.

These also make for good man overboard recovery systems. If you combine the two methods you can hoist almost anything.

I use a 4:1 block and tackle with integral cam cleat, snap shackled to a webbing sling looped over the boom for my 'big' OB. For my 2HP I simply lift it aboard or leave it attached to the dinghy while the dink is on its davits.

I lifted a 4d battery out of my cavernous lazarette using the boom with two triple blocks (six part?) with camcleat and becket(s). It was a one handed operation but the camcleat made it possible to let go of the line at the end of each up pull. That freed my other hand to guide the battery. It was an old main sheet which had been a vang ... but there was plenty of line - which you will need to go down to water level.
Also I did this in my slip when it was calm. If I were in an anchorage, the boom would be outside the range of the traveler and I would want a preventer to hold the boom from swaying with the outboard slinging around.
We have a removable davit on the transom for the outboard which I use about half the time. We only have a 3.5 motor which is 27 lbs. and I can lift it without the hoist. I have the strap on the motor housing which is a big help.
Like to haul the mail ... eh?

I use my removable boom vang from the end of the boom to lift heavy stuff on occasion.

One real concern that I would have about storing the outboard in the sail locker is gas fumes. If the locker communicates with the bilge I would not do it. If there was gas in the carburetor it might be very dangerous.

run the engine out of fuel before storing. isnt difficult to do. take oars with ye.
