Secondly, the nuts are in the same orientation as they were when I removed them, not to mention the same as the boats around me. Checked several. As long as they are properly torqued and have a cotter pin installed correctly, there isn't much to worry about. The actual standard is from ABYC and SAE, which is what Mainsail is referring to.
It's not just the ABYC & SAE but also the, USCG, US Navy, Michigan Wheel (largest propeller manufacturer), Dave Gerr - Propeller Hand Book author, Steve D'Antonio, Nigel Calder, Western Branch Metals (largest shafting manufacturer) etc. etc. etc....

Just because everyone around you installed their prop nuts incorrectly does not mean you need to as well. You may get lucky for another 20 years yet you may not and you may find your shaft has snapped one day and your prop is gone..

Twin engine boat, no lapping, one $3800.00 prop snapped the shaft, found luckily in bottom of slip, and one shaft destroyed.. Port side prop loose, key damaged and both prop nuts had been installed incorrectly...

Gotta love the "that's the way we've always done it" mentality. While still in the corporate world, I made sure the folks advancing that thought were given short leashes and short notices.

Ran into it again last month in the form of a dockmaster who took a bow line, ignored Karen's explicit instruction to double it back to her, and cleared it off, short, thereby ruining my approach. He explained, while tying four lines to four cleats four different ways (none of them a proper cleat hitch) that he "tied up 4000 boats a year". I said "that's a lot of practice doing it incorrectly".

@SFS nice statement of fact. 2 questions.
  1. Did he hear you?
  2. Did he have an audible response?
  3. Ok 3. Can you state it here without running afoul of the censors?

@jssailem So glad you asked, as I truncated the story. He heard me, as I said it TO him, just after he denied my request to make the spring lines as long as possible. So I followed it with "tell you what, you tie it how you want, and when you're done, I'll thank you for your help, and then I'll retie it the way I want it". He said, "you'll leave it tied this way, it's my dock". And I said "but it's my BOAT. When you start paying the bills associated with MY boat, I'll consider allowing you to tie it up the way you want. I'll be in to pay you for the dockage as soon as I've checked the county property records on my computer below decks. The actual owner of the property will be hearing from me. In the meantime, if you have any questions, direct them to my attorney, who is the woman you failed to hand the bow line back to as requested. I'm sure she's as impressed by your knowledge as I am".

The last was a bit of a stretch, technically, because my wife is not licensed in our state of residence, nor is she in the state in which we were standing, but his attitude change was noticeable.

I had a fabulous boss late in my career that was remarkably squared away at a very young age. He was a gifted manager to boot. I heard him say one day to an employee that was trying to milk a situation rather than just do his job: "OK, I'll play your silly little game, for a short time, but you will not win". I pull that out sometimes to deal with the BS'ers, if I have the energy, and there was some of that in play with this guy

But mostly, this exchange came more from my own philosophy - around age 35, I decided I wasn't going to suffer fools gladly. At around 45, I decided I wasn't going to suffer fools. Now I just don't suffer. Sometimes the fools identify themselves pretty quickly.

My apologies for the thread drift. It's been a reflective day, we are tied up (properly) in a Marina, and I've had a scotch.

Sounds like you earned the scotch, perhaps two.
Enjoyed the clarity. With a spreading smile the more I read.

You were fortunate to be receptive to the lesson at 35. Many see it go by and never know what they missed.

Kelsey has moved shop to the Comox Valley in BC. He actually machines the props in a shop right here in town. I spent a little time with him and he showed me how the props are made. He also services and sells Kiwis and others. Very cool. I had a Campbell for a few years but changed out to a Kiwi feather in the end that I found on Craigslist, but the Campbell was definitely smoother and very powerful.

When I ordered mine around the first of the year, Kelsey said he had recently moved. When we talked about installing the prop he said I could do it in Comox on the Tidal Grid. I said what is that. Oh you pull your boat to the dock lash it to the Grid, and when the tide goes out the Boat is high and dry. Put the prop on go have a beer and wait for the tide to float the boat. Sounded interesting. But we worked out his shipping the prop to me, and I put it on while I was on the hard for other repairs.
Love it.

Campbell told me their three blade has about the same drag as my two blade. Hunter 37.5 prop. Neither can compare to a folding or feathering prop except of course in price.

Is there any prop walk when going astern with a CS? Sorry if that's a dumb question, I've never driven a boat with a CS prop.

I find it minimal. Similar experience when going forward. Enough prop walk that I can get the boat to spin in it’s own length. But I have to work at it. Unlike the Michigan wheel with big ears I had. Throw that one in gear and the boat would walk from here to Sunday and half way back.

regarding prop walk, I find my boat backs very well and easily managed, with pulses of higher RPMs to induce a necessary amount of "walk"

I actually tend to find prop walk useful at times. Is there a significant lead time on CS props?
