Saw a very clean 1986 Hunter 31. Anybody have one or have an opinion? This forum is great.

Love ours!

We just purchased a 1987 Hunter 31 this past spring and love it. This is our first boat and we are real new to the sailing aspect. It's very forgiving, handles great (except in a light breeze) and provides plenty of room for my wife and I, along with friends other things that slip in. Overall we have been very pleased and the boat itself was in excellent shape except for alittle cleaning and making it feel like home for us. So...from a newbie standpoint we could not be happier. Good sailing!!! Larry from Chesapeake, VA

H31 value

We've had our Hunter 31 since 1986 and put several thousand miles beneath her keel. We have put her through many "tests" and she has come through with flying colors. Compare the new '31s to the used ones and you'll be in for a few surprises. The older ones were better made, have a better layout with more gear, and better ventilation. Keep in mind, these boats are meant to sail fairly flat with about 12-15 degrees heel. They are rather tender and you'll find reducing sail area early makes for a more comfortable ride that doesn't sacrifice on speed. Biggest hassle-no gauges for fuel, water or holding tanks. The Yanmar diesel engine is a true warhorse that keeps on ticking (with proper maintenance). Do your homework and you'll buy the used '31. -Regards, Michael O' "Irish Mist"

So much space

We have only recently purchased a 1986 31 and both my wife and I love it. The space and layout below are wonderful compared with a small 27 that we had. The boat almost sails by itself into wind. No gripes yet. Andrew Summer Wind Annapolis

I agree.....

I've heard that the boat was a little tender. My '87 has new sails haven't had this problem. I've owned it for 3 seasons, like it more every year. If the toilet hasn't been replaced yet plan on a new one, you can't buy parts for the old Sealand. Also i'd recommend replacing the old gate valve thru hulls if they're still aboard. Be aware of the compression post issues. I don't have this problem and don't know if it's a owner maintenance issue or what. I do believe it's the best boat for the money I've seen, performance is also great!!!!

Love our H31

We bought Endless Summer (1983 H31 #58) in Norfolk, VA in 1993. In 1996 we made the 1200 mile trip down the Intracoastal Waterway to the Florida Keys. Never had a problem. The Yanmar continues to chug along. Now we're waiting in the Ft. Lauderdale for a fall crossing to the Southern Bahamas. We looked at Catalina 30s, but the H31 won beacuse of all the storage space. Good Luck with your H31 Roger Mummah rmummah@mindspring.com
