Another, good old tiller pilot topic

Few months ago, one of those cold winter nights, when it was too cold to work on my boat, i was doing what most fellow sailors do in their spare time. i placed a bid on a simrad TP10 and after winning started to gather few other thing to complete the installation. So far i have the pilot, tiller pin and the pedestal socket assembly. i may have to get a tiller arm bracket i guess. I have read the instructions few times and it puts right on top of the locker lid. I have a set of lovely cockpit cushions and i like to lay on them like a cow so i am afraid sacrifices will have to be made if i want that tiller to work, unless you have a clever cuggestions. God i even thought about cutting a donut shaped hole in the cushion:)Another thing is; how much force it would apply to the locker lid? only thing holds the lids down is a a piano hinge screwed with a 14 very small screws. If i have to install it on the lid and the applied forces are monsterous, i have to come up with some mods. A through bolted better hinge maybe? I have searched the old tiller topics and i see many people ok with installing the pilot aft of the lid. Last note: my planned location for the plug is somewhere under the traveler to keep it sort of away from the main action area.

Groundhog I don't see how that will work. The lazzerette is the hatch aft of the mains sheet traveler. The arm on the TP should push from further up on the tiller and when mounted should be 90 degrees from the tiller when it is in the middle of the boat.
The further forward on the tiller the less work it will have due to increasing leverage. Also the less ability to go hard over. I didn't find any difficulties from the piano hinge having to much stress. It is being transferred to the entire length of the hinge.
We did make a bracket that is screwed to the top of the tiller since the tiller is to low in the cockpit. Our power socket is on the side of the well a few inches below the hatch cover and a few inches aft of the TP. Not sure how you will deal with the cushion
problem. WaltP.S. If I may ask, what was your winning bid? From: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com on behalf of ground hog groundhogyh@... [AlbinVega] AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com

Hi. The price was $130 shipped. i bought tiller pin, power socket and the horizontal mounting stuff separately(not expensive). The instructions suggest 18 inches from the tiller head 90 degree angle to the tiller. the distance(if you install it on the fiberglass, aft of the lid) is 10 inch. If it was few inches i wouldn't worry as much but thats a big difference. i read someone suggesting to steer the boat placing your hand 10 inch away from the tiller head and then 18 inch, to realize how much more effort you have to insert. Again i have never laid my hands on the vega tiller in actual sailing so i can't say it according to my experience, just reflecting what i ve read online. When you balance the sails in a smart way, it doesn't really feel like you fighting with a 10 foot crocodile to control the tiller. That i can say depending on my previous sail experience aboard cat22(my previous boat). So if i get more input on the force not being crazy enough to disturb the hinge and the attachment points, i may lean towards installing it on top of the lid, just for the sake of following the instruction for the unit.

No.

I installed my TP 10 socket aft of the starboard locker cover.

This gives me access to the locker when sailing and allows the ram
to push/pull the tiller through a greater angle.

IMO the TP10 is a decent piece of gear - following the
"instructions" blindly is not necessary.

if lazerette refers to the rearmost hatch, then i used the wrong term. Mine is placed just aft of the starboard wood hatch.
I would place the power socket on the area under the traveler

John,Hi, I'm Hal with Vega 827. I'm thinking of installing the TP 10 and would greatly appreciate if you could send some photos of how you installed it aft of the locker. I would like to see how you did it as that position appeals to me. Thanks ever so much in advance,Hal Hal Kearsley From: "John Kinsella John.Kinsella@... For what it is worth here are a couple of pictures of my TP10. Apologies
for dirty boat. On a bit of a refit down below will deal with rest in a
week or two.

PS. It's getting a bit dark here.

John,

Hi, I'm Hal with Vega 827. I'm thinking of installing the TP 10 and would
greatly appreciate if you could send some photos of how you installed it
aft of the locker. I would like to see how you did it as that position
appeals to me. Thanks ever so much in advance,

Hal

Hi Graeme, thanks for the interest, but I don't see the photos. What am I missing???? Maybe I'm not looking in the right area. Will they be under the "Photos" section of this Yahoo group? Hal

i am almost done with the simrad tp 10. i have to let it sit overnight for the epoxy to set(tiller pin). When i 've ordered the parts for the installation, i didn't know about the different height options etc. so i got something from ebay. you can see it in the pictures. with that part attached to the flange, the nit sits pretty high in the cockpit. first it seemed great because when i measured 18 inch from the tiller head and 90 degree, my location for the base would be very aft near the mast track. with that set up i was able to use the unit while my cockpit cushion stayed 100% usable. Noticing all the other set ups place the tiller base more fore near the cockpit locker, i decided to go with similar aproach. i ll post another picture tomorrow with everthing connected. you can see the pictures under albums "simrad tp10". How does it look?
