Another furler question

i am going to get new 3/16" rigging for my boat over the winter. am still up in the air about weather or not i want a furler. (i use a downhaul now). my question is: should i go ahead and design an extension to bring the headstay chainplate above decks in preparation for a furler if i deciede to go that way, (and have the new headstay made to the appropriate length)? and, if so how far above deck? or, are there furlers designed to work with the current system. if i do a furler i want the best, most reliable, furler/system available.....not just something that "will work" (suggestions on manufacturers?)regards,william

I just bought a CDI

and it is very user friendly. Go to CDI's web site and thesailwarehouse.com. They can both help you. Most likely, no change/mod is necessary if you get the CDI. You will probably need a new sail - expensive to modify your current hank on. TSW has furler/sail packages that are pretty cost effective. Look at the ff4 with ball bearing upgrade. Probably all in you are looking at $1,500 but its easy to install yourself and there's been much praise of CDI and its performance.

Do you have a wing keel 23?

If you have a wing keel 23 and not a 23.5 then have the headstay made 12 inches shorter and buy 12 inch S.S. link plates. You have to get the furling drum up off the deck so the anchor doors will clear it. I have the CDI unit and it's great. You can buy the unit without the bearings and add them later if you like, I don't have them and my wife has no problem at all furling the sail in. If you had a larger boat you might need them but the genoa on a fractional rig 23 isn't very big.
